GENERAL EDUCATION OUTCOME ASSESSMENT PLAN, “COMMON ASSIGNMENT(S)”

This is the assignment that all professors teaching a section in the San Jacinto College Core Curriculum will agree upon, teach, assign, assess and document in Blackboard.

Summary (for faculty, expository explanation of assignment) Students will visit a museum or gallery for research to prepare and write a two-page paper. The assignment is to choose TWO ARTWORKS to write a compare and contrast paper. Five shared questions are provided for consideration while conducting research and writing the paper. Students are expected to include proper usage of terms relative to the visual elements and principles of design. Through the writing process, they will analyze and discuss the artist’s cultural and historical backgrounds and draw conclusions as to their influence. In addition, they will consider any perceived similarities and reflect on what they think the artist was trying to communicate. After completing their paper, they will submit in Blackboard through the designated Shared Assignment aligned with the prescribed General Education Outcomes.

Note: Online students living outside the Houston metro area need to contact the instructor for assistance in locating an appropriate venue for their research.

Parameters/Logistics (for faculty, specific parameters or logistics when implementing)  (Do not remove, standard for all courses) The assignment must be collected through an “Assignment” content item in Blackboard. Faculty electing to use Turnitin may do so, but students will need to submit the document twice: first to the Bb “Assignment” content item and second to Turnitin.  (Do not remove, standard for all courses) The assignment assesses an outcome included in the syllabus for the course; thus, all assignments should be included as a regular grade in the course. The assignment should not be considered optional, extra-credit, or a bonus activity.

Do the two works share any similar ideas, approaches to subject or use of materials? 5. What do you think the artists are trying to communicate in their work?

Proper usage of terms relative to the visual elements and principles of design is expected. The two-page compare and contrast paper should be typed with proper formatting, befitting a college paper.
