WASTEWATER COLLECTION SUPERVISOR

DEFINITION Under direction, plans, organizes and supervises the operation, maintenance, repair and inspection of sewage collection systems and lift stations; performs a variety of the more difficult work assignments in sewage collection system operations and maintenance including maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities; and performs related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS This is a full supervisory classification, which combines supervisory and advanced working level responsibility. Assignments include full responsibility for providing daily work direction and training for all Wastewater Service Workers, as well as performing the more difficult and complex assignments in the operation and maintenance of sewage collection facilities and the maintenance and repair of waste treatment facilities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (Illustrative Only) Essential:  Directs collection system workers to determine the performance and efficiency of collection system components and lift stations  Conducts or assists in training of collection system personnel in processes, operation of equipment, preventative maintenance and record keeping  Prepares requisitions and work orders for material, equipment, repairs and services and supplies; develops specifications for technical items as necessary  Provides information for preparation of the annual budget  Plans and implements maintenance procedures for all collection systems and lift stations  Prepares work schedules and monthly, annual and special reports on collection system operation and maintenance  Manages a spare parts inventory for all collection systems assigned  Prepares and conducts ongoing safety programs; provides for inspection and approval of sewer services  Responds to customer complaints or inquiries regarding sewer service  Evaluates performance of assigned staff  Performs the full range of maintenance work on facilities and systems

QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of:  Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in wastewater collection system operation and maintenance  Principles of collection system construction and inspection  Sampling and testing procedures necessary for collection system facilities  Safety principles and practices  Principles of management, supervision, training and work planning and scheduling  Budgetary preparation and expenditure control  Techniques for efficient utilization of staff, equipment and materials  Basic mathematics, chemistry, biology and physics  Basic personal computer software for word processing and spread sheets  Basic electrical and electronic circuitry  Record keeping and report writing

Skill in:  Planning, implementing and directing collection system operations, maintenance, testing procedures and safety programs; supervising assigned staff  Recognizing and correcting abnormal equipment or system conditions  Maintaining, evaluating, and utilizing technical and administrative reports  Performing and evaluating collection system control tests  Developing budget information; preparing routine and special reports  Reading and interpreting plans, specifications, operations and maintenance manuals, and wastewater collection system piping schematics  Performing mathematical computations associated with wastewater collection systems  Responding to customers with tact and judgment  Reading, writing and speaking English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance  Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

Education and Experience:

Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade and two years of experience comparable to that of a Senior Wastewater Service Worker in Nevada County.

Licenses and Certificates Possession of a valid class B California driver's license within 30 days of hire. Possession of a Grade IV Certificate in Collection System Maintenance issued by the California Water Pollution Control Association is desirable. Possession of a HazMat/Confined Space Certification is desirable.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Mobility and strength to lift and carry tools, parts, and equipment up to 50 pounds; mobility to reach, bend, grasp, climb, stoop, work in confined spaces and awkward positions; manual dexterity to operate precision tools and equipment and operate a variety of dials and tools; sense of smell to detect overheated components; vision to Wastewater Collection Supervisor - Page 3

read handwritten and printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and by telephone.

Willingness and ability to work in exposure to weather, temperature extremes, toxins, chemicals, fumes, dust, unpleasant smells and equipment noise.

Willingness and ability to assume stand-by duty and occasionally work holidays, evenings, weekends and overtime.

Other Requirements: Positions in this classification are defined as "Safety Sensitive" per the U.S. Department of Transportation Regulations. Individuals hired into these positions will be subject to Pre-Employment Drug Testing, Random Drug and Alcohol Testing, Reasonable Suspicion Right to Test and Post Accident Drug/Alcohol Testing.

May be required to pass a medical examination.

Must maintain facial hair in such a way as to ensure proper fit of respiratory equipment.
