The Environmental Movement: Major Events Timeline

Worksheet 7.1 The environmental movement: Major events timeline

Your task  Find the dates and details of major events that have lead to the development of the environmental movement.

 Add these to a timeline to show when events occurred, the inter- relationship between different major events, and how the environmental movement has developed.

Creating the timeline  Complete the information boxes on the following pages (pages 2–4), adding the date and details for each major event. Use the internet and textbook to help you.  Take a 1.5 metre strip of paper that is 15 cm wide.  Place the strip vertically and draw a line down the centre of the strip. Divide the scale into decades (10-year periods): work out an appropriate time-scale from the earliest major event to the most recent. Write the years on the centre of the strip.  Stick the major-events boxes at appropriate places on the timeline – if several dates overlap then fit the boxes on either side of the timeline to make space as appropriate.  The timeline provides a good visual way of learning the major events you need to know about and their correspondence with each other. It also clearly shows the development of the environmental movement.
