Cartwheel Activity
Category Description Name of Activity Cartwheel performance and video Learning The student will be able to perform a cartwheel using the Goals/Objectives correct cues. The student will be able to scan a QR code to access the teaching demonstration video. Grade level & 3rd Grade SOLs 3.1 The student will apply locomotor, non-locomotor, and manipulative skills in increasingly complex movement activities. a) Demonstrate most of the critical elements (small, isolated parts of the whole skill or movement) for manipulative skills (e.g., throw and catch a variety of objects, kick to stationary and moving partners/objects, dribble with dominant hand/foot, pass a ball to a moving partner). b) Refine individual gymnastics skills, and perform educational gymnastic sequences with balance, transfer of weight, travel, and change of direction. Organization/ Students will be placed into groups of 2-3. Equipment There will be in their own designated areas where a + Technology floor mat has been set up. Ipads will be checked out by one group member and will be used at their appropriate learning center. All Ipads should be re-checked at the end of class. Detailed Procedures will be as follows: Description of 1. Instant Activity. Students will follow an Activity instructor led activity. Their hands will be on the ground while they jump from one side to the other. 2. Review. The teacher will review the cues for performing a cartwheel (point your toe, raise your crown, fall - swing through) 3. Set Induction. The teacher will discuss how the class will be using Ipads to create videos of themselves performing the cues of cartwheels, to evaluate. The students will be told to scan the QR code to watch the instructor perform the skill. The QR code will take the student to the KINS203 instructor’s YouTube page where they will see the video titled “ cartwheel teacher”. That is the only video students will need to view. 4. Organization. Students will be divided into groups of 2-3 students. The tallest student in the group will sign out an Ipad. The shortest student in the group will be responsible picking a mat and poly spot. The middle person in the groups will be responsible for returning ALL equipment 5. Content. In their groups students will create a video that demonstrates the skill of performing a cartwheel. Each student will have the opportunity to take a video and perform the skill. Students will use the video app to take the video, and only that app. There should be a continuous discussion on each student’s performance. Students will take three videos to demonstrate the growth of their performance, and highlight aspects of the skill they need to work on. 6. Variations. Low skilled students will use the aid of the instructor as a spotter to highlight the area they are struggling the most with, and as their partner takes the video, they can go back and watch it to determine the root of their struggle. 7. Discussion. Upon completion of the activity students will discuss in their groups about how the videos aided their performance and any questions that they might have. 8. Homework. For homework students will be asked to go home and practice their cartwheels in a safe environment so that next class they will have already reviewed and be able to perform the skill using the correct cues. Integration of The use of video will enhance the students Technology understanding of how to perform the skill of a cartwheel correctly. They will be able to make connections from the video to their own performance that will aid them in future activity. Using the QR code provided, students will be able to view the instructor’s performance if they have any concerns they aren’t performing the skill correctly. Assessment Students will be assessed in the psychomotor domain. The teacher will be able to review the student’s videos KINS203 and see if they were able to perform the cartwheel using the correct skill cues. Students will be graded on their continued effort to perform the cartwheel.
