COURSE: Pediatric Nursing
PLACEMENT: Semester 3 – PRN0096
TIME ALLOTMENT: 44 Hours
PURPOSE: The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to the pediatric nursing care concepts that will enhance their ability to provide care for pediatric patients utilizing nursing principles (36.0 ).
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The student will be introduced to growth and development of the child from infancy to eighteen years, care of the hospitalized child, and common medical and surgical disorders of children of all ages. ( 36.01- 36.07 )
SUMMARY OF UNITS:
Unit I - Growth and Development and Health Promotion for the Pediatric Patient
Unit II - Basic Pediatric Nursing Care and Nursing Care of the Pediatric Patient with a Cardiovascular Disorder
Unit III – Nursing Care of the Pediatric Patient with a Hematologic, Immune, Neoplastic, Respiratory, Gastrointestinal, Genitourinary or Endocrine Disorder
Unit IV – Nursing Care of the Pediatric Patient with a Musculoskeletal, Neurologic, Integumentary, Sensory, Cognitive or Mental Disorder
METHODS OF EVALUATION: Evaluation will be based upon written objective tests and quizzes as well as instructor assigned projects/assignments, class participation and preparedness.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS: For successful completion of this course, the student must have an average grade of 80% based on the four unit exams/quizzes and other unit assignments. Additionally, the student must maintain an average score of 80% from all methods of evaluation which includes a Pediatric Pharmacology Calculations Quiz.

PN3_Peds Rev. 11/14 MC/JP/ES UNIT I – Growth and Development and Health Promotion for the Pediatric Patient
OBJECTIVES:
On completion of this unit, the student will be able to:
1. Define growth and development and identify basic principals of growth and development.
2. Define what a family is and identify different types of families.
3. Identify Erickson’s stages of psychosocial development.
4. Describe several ways of building self-esteem in children.
5. Identify Piaget’s stages of cognitive development.
6. Identify developmental milestones achieved by the infant, toddler, preschooler, school- age child and adolescent.
7. Discuss nutrition needs of the healthy child and indicate changes that take place during illness.
8. Discuss the role of play and identify toys that are appropriate for each age group.
9. State safety guidelines necessary in both the hospital and home setting.
10. Discuss how physical activity, obesity, tobacco use, substance abuse, sexual behavior and violence affect the health of the pediatric patient.
11. Identify the schedule for well child examinations and describe recommended immunization schedules.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES:
Students are expected to complete workbook activities that correspond with chapter readings to enhance learning and facilitate successful completion of this course.
Instructors may assign workbook activities to be submitted for review/grading.

Upon completion of this unit, the student will be able to:
1. State the purpose of pediatric nursing.
2. Identify key characteristics of the pediatric nurse.
3. Discuss the concept of family centered care.
4. List the data to be collected when assessing the pediatric patient.
5. Discuss assessment strategies specific to the pediatric patient.
6. Identify normal ranges for pediatric vital signs.
7. Identify age related concerns and needs of children who are hospitalized.
8. Discuss issues that are specific to the pediatric surgical patient. 7 9. Discuss the role of the practical nurse in performing the following pediatric patient care procedures: Bathing Feeding Safety devices Specimen collection Oxygen therapy IV therapy Intake and output Medication administration Weighing 10. Define Congenital Heart Disease
11. Describe nursing interventions and patient teaching strategies to be used in caring for the pediatric patient with Congenital Heart Disease.
12. List nursing diagnoses relevant to the patient with Congenital Heart Disease.

18 Identify physical and behavioral manifestations that may be observed in the child who is being abused or neglected.
19 Define School Avoidance, and identify the nurses primary role in working with parents who’s children exhibit this behavior.
