Both Northern and Southern states wanted to gain more power by either allowing or denying slavery in these territories. 2. Why was the Free-Soil Party created? Leaders wanted to stop the spread of slavery to the west. Broke away from the Whigs 12. Dred Scott Decision Dred Scott was not given the right to sue his owner because he was African American. Slavery was legal in all territories because living in a free territory did not make one free. 13. Why did Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln become rivals? Both wanted the same government position. Both sides were trying to become more powerful with in the government and CA would tip the scale of power in favor of one side. 23. He did not support the Kansas-Nebraska Act proposed by Stephen Douglas. 25. Why did the North and South choose different candidates in the election of 1860? Both sides chose candidates that they believed would benefit their causes concerning the future of slavery. 26. How might history have been different if Lincoln did not run for President and instead Stephen Douglas wins the election of 1860? You will have to develop your own opinion to answer this question.
