RECORDS of ELIHU & HANNAH SHERMAN (REHS) February 5 2001 1 The original title of the paper was: A Condensed Family Record History of the Ancestors of Captain Elihu Sherman born in 1777 at Rochester, Massachusetts and continuation of his descendants, Second Edition, by Alden R Sherman, September1955. This original was a forty page paper written by Alden Russell Sherman of Rochester New York in 1955, as the result of his extensive on site research of this family. There was also a ten page undated supplement to this paper, written some time later. Based on the latest date in the Supplement it was probably published in 1960. The pages of the paper were numbered 1 through 40, and the pages of the supplement were numbered 1s through 10s. The original paper was a working paper and never published, and had very limited distribution. It was difficult to read, so it has been rearrange so it is easier to read and can be afforded a wider distribution. The paper is important because it contains some family history research not available in any other places. It is known that most of the information in the original paper was collected first hand by Alden R Sherman by visits to many individual families. It does not appear Alden R Sherman did much research in libraries etc. In the rearranged paper, the page number of the original paper, is shown in parenthesis. All the original data for Elihu Sherman and his descendants are included, and none has been modified. However, A few introductory pages about Elihu's ancestors have been excluded, because this data is currently available from many other sources. Except for Elihu's ancestors, only the format and title have been changed. 6 Elihu Sherman. Elihu was baptized Dec 1777 (p4). Elihu and Hannah Russell of Dartmouth MA were married on August 22nd 1799. Hannah was born August 22 1775, a daughter of Elijah Russell and wife Hannah Brayton of Swanzey MA and was of Irish and Scotch descent. These parents were married in the faith of the Friends Society October 25 1764. Hannah Brayton Russell died April 1835, age 91years. The date of Elijah Russell's death is missing. (p4). Elihu and Hannah Sherman after marriage resided in the vicinity of Mattapoisett and Acushnet MA for several years but later moved to New Bedford MA where the husband was engaged in cod fishing and was captain over a fleet of boats. (p4). Records of the first four children were destroyed in a fire when the family bible burned. (p4). During the War of 1812 the British destroyed all the fishing boats that had been under the command of Capt Elihu Sherman. He was not able to recover from the loss financially and was forced to retire from the seafaring business. He was made sheriff and for a few years held that office in Bristol County and in New Bedford MA. His wife, Hannah, had cousins who had left the section a few years earlier and migrated to the Quaker Basin near what later became Deruyter NY in Madsion County. The Sherman family saw RECORDS of ELIHU & HANNAH SHERMAN (REHS) February 5 2001 2 nothing encouraging ahead, they too migrated to NY in 1818 or 1819 and lived for a time with their relatives. Eventually in 1819 Elihu Sherman purchased farmland of 150 acres for $422 in Deruyter Township. However a land agent informed him of a fifty acre farm that was for sale in Cayuga County NY and in a nice location overlooking Cayuga Lake. Upon visiting the location with the agent he was thrilled with its location only one and a half miles from the water. The farm in Deruyter was sold at a gain and the family went on the land near the lake with the first privilege to purchase. In 1821 he purchased this farm for $1,500. This farm was situated in what was then a thriving hamlet called Moonshine NY in Scipio Township but later separated as Ledyard Township, Cayuga Co. This farm continued to remain in the Sherman family over a period of sixty years. It may be well to note here that the last child, Nancy was born on this farm in Moonshine NY. (p5). Eight Children: 7 1. Minerva Sherman (Allen). Birth date missing (p4). She married a Samuel Allen, a physician. They moved to Ohio and the doctor was very successful and became well to do. But after a period of years they left Ohio and move to some western state where all trace of them has been unsuccessful. Thus it is not known that they left any descendants. (p5). 7 2. Alden Sherman. Birth date missing (p4). Alden, and his brother David, left their home in NY around 1823 or 1824 and went to what was then Upper Canada, now Ontario, and settled among the Society of Friends at Norwich ON in Oxford County. He married Mary Ann Barton of Norwich ON in the Oxford District, Jul 4 1826 in the Norwich Friends Meeting. This family did not continue to live in Canada only a few years and moved to OH where tracing has been unsuccessful. (p5). The following children of Alden and Mary Ann Sherman left no available data or records of their lives (p7). Maryette 8 Sherman. Birth date not found (p5). Catherine 8 Sherman (Deuel). Birth date not found (p5). Sarah 8 Sherman. Birth date not found (p5). Jesse 8 Sherman. Birth date not found (p5). David 8 Sherman. Born in 1829 (p5). He married Cynthia Sherman, his cousin daughter of Zephaniah7 Sherman. They were married in OH but took up residence later near StJohns MI in Clinton County. Both are buried in MtRest Cemetery in StJohns MI. (p12). 1. Unnamed (male) 9 Sherman. Died in childhood (p12). 2. Unnamed (male) 9 Sherman. Died in childhood (p12). 3. Margaret 9 Sherman (Cornell). Born in 1858 (p12). She married William S Cornell , who was born 1857. They resided in the vicinity of StJohns MI. They had no children. Both are deceased and are buried in MtRest Cemetery in StJohns MI (p12). 4. Amerlia 9 Sherman (Corwin). Birth date missing. Birth date missing (p4). David, and his brother Alden, left their home in NY around 1823 or 1824 and went to what was then Upper Canada, now Ontario, and settled among the Society of Friends at Norwich ON in Oxford County. He married Sara T Barton around 1830 at Norwich ON, but not in the Friends Monthly Meeting. She was disowned by the Society for the act. They followed the career of farmers in Oxford County and adjoining Brant County. (p5). David left OH and returned in later years to the section of Canada where he was born in the vicinity of Norwich ON. Sarah died May 31 1845, her death record derived from record of the Society of Friends Monthly Meeting at Norwich ON. David died around 1880 and is buried in the Pioneer Cemetery at Burford ON (p21). 1. Harriet 8 Sherman (Peckham). Born Feb 25 1831 near Norwich ON (p6). She and Peter Peckham were married at Brantford ON Canada in1850. They became farmers in Brant County ON. (p7). Peter died Oct 3 1891 and Harriet died Jan 27 1912. They are buried in Brantford ON (p21). 1. Emmor 9 Peckham. Born Sep 21 1852 (p7). Oct 8 1875 he married Rachel Ellen Martin of Ingersoll ON, who was born Apr 2 1856. They were farmers. (p20). 1. When his mother died the farm passed to Russell and his brother Howland, according to their father's will. In 1863 Russell purchased his brother's half. She married Edward Aikin 1883, and purchased a farm in Ledyard about 1/4 mile east of Willetts Station NY, near Cayuga Lake. He was a widower and had a son named Frederick from the former marriage. Edward died Apr 11 1884, age 35 years, and was buried beside his first wife in the Aikin- Gould family cemetery in the town of Scipio NY Cayuga County. Charlotte died Oct 31 1912, age 68y7m3d, and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, one half mile west of Scipoville NY. There were no children by this marriage. (p17). 3. Mary Elizabeth 8 Sherman (Fowler). Born Aug 14 1846 (p7). She married George W Fowler 1870. He was a native of Scipio Township and served in Company E Third Regiment, NY Light Artillery in the Civil War. After marriage they lived a short time in Auburn NY where he was in the employed at The Ford Shoe Company. The company moved from to Rochester NY, and they also moved to Rochester and he continued in the employment with the shoe company. He spent the remainder of his life. (p17). Edwin was married 1st to Edith Gervin in 1898, and died May 5 1941. Adelaide died Nov 10th 1949 and was buried beside her first husband in the cemetery at Ingleside NY. Edwin was married 3rd to Edith Kerchofer in Rochester NY. They soon decided to move to FL and in the winter of 1953 they took up residence in their new home at 2535 Six Ave South, StPetersburg FL. Edith died Jul 12 1954 in StPetersburg FL, and was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Rochester NY. Edwin was married 4th on Jan 1955 in StPetersburg FL to Mrs Maude Stephenson, a widow. He married Viola Brimsmaid Dec 1871. Viola had been born in 1850, daughter of Zalmon and Ruth Brimsmaid of Venice NY in Cayuga Co. William followed the career of a farmer. He married Rosanna "Rosa" Elizabeth Ostrander Dec 21 1876, who was born Apr 3 1856 in Auelius Township Cayuga County NY, daughter of Cornelius P and Adeline Ostrander. 1859 they lived in Sherwood NY in Scipio Township Cayuga County. After marriage they lived in Popular Ridge NY where the husband carried on his trade of a blacksmith and wagon maker. They are the parents of the writer of this sketch. Elihu carried on his trade until about 1908. Around 1898 he had entered in a meat market business with his younger son and this they carried on until the son severed his connection and the father continued after 1908 until ill health forced him to abandon the business around 1920. Dec 21 1926 Mr and Mrs Elihu Sherman celebrated their fiftieth anniversary of marriage. They lived in the same house for fifty-nine years until death separated them. The last five years at teaching were as Principle of York Union School in Livingston County NY. Following a period of illness an offer of a position as General Foreman over the Genesee Salt Company was accepted late in 1914. This was located at Piffard NY. This family then became residents of Genesee NY. Up on his death of the manager late in 1919 he was given that responsibility which he carried until 1923 when he resigned and entered a lithographic establishment in Rochester NY. She married John Francis McGuire Apr 1922 in Genesee NY, he was born May 9 1899 in Rochester NY. He was a graduate from Genesee High School and had training in Genesee State Normal School. At the time of marriage he was a postal clerk in the Post Office in Rochester NY. After marriage they lived in Rochester NY. He held this position through the years until he was advanced to assistant, and Superintendent of Mail in 1943. In 1947 he was appointed assistant post-master and this position he held until 1953. He was in the meat business with his father at the time of the marriage. After marriage he also entered farming and after a few years he discontinued his part in the meat business. In 1922 they sold their farm 1/2 mile South of Sherwood NY, and moved to Auburn NY, where he was engaged in business for the Dairymen's League. They lived at 55 Park Ave, Auburn NY. Later he worked for the American Locomotive Works in Auburn NY and was in their employment when he died Jul 10 1947. He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Scipioville NY.(p39). 1. This has resulted in an unsuccessful marriage with separation. Alice and her mother own the home at 55 Park Ave. Auburn NY, they and Alice's son are living there. Alice is dietician in the East High School of Auburn NY. (p39) 1. Ronald Frank 11 Davis. Born Dec 21 1940 (p39). He married Nellie May DeLapp in 1888. She was born 1863 and was a schoolteacher when married. He was a farmer and they bought a farm two and a half miles south of Aurora NY, near the lake. The parents gave up farming and moved to Popular Ridge, where the husband became care taker of a property of a retired resident. They purchased their home in Popular Ridge. Nellie died Jul 15 1915 at age 52 years. The husband sold the home and worked at farm work for others, and later lived on a farm near Auburn NY. Isaac died Jan 2 1939 at age 79 years. (p20). 1. Clara Louise 9 Sherman. Born in 1890 or 1891, and died from an infantile sickness in 1894 (p20). 10. Frederick 8 Sherman. Born May 9 1861 (p7). He married Fanny Chase Dec 1885. She was a native of Springport Township, born in 1863. He was a farmer and few years after marriage he purchased a vineyard farm of about five acres in Levanna NY. Frederick died from a heart in 1917 and buried in Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Union Springs NY. No children. (p20). 7 8. Nancy Sherman (Huntley). Born Aug 26 1820 (p4). She married Alonzo Huntley around 1849, who was born Sep 12 1818 in Venice or Moravia Township of Cayuga County NY. After their marriage they migrated to MI where they took up a claim in new and undeveloped land, later as Lot # 7 of Bengal Township Clinton County, consisting of one hundred acres where they spent the remainder of their days.
