Medical Careers Class Rules

Medical Careers Class Rules

1. Absence/Lateness: Follow procedures outlined in the DCTS Student Discipline Policy Manual. On clinical days, students should text Mrs. Murray so she can notify the unit that the student will not be attending. A parental note is required within 3 days of returning to class. If a note is not submitted, the absence will be listed as unexcused. Excessive unexcused absences/lateness will result in the loss of clinical rotation privileges and a disciplinary referral. College visits and doctors appointments will be excused if the required documentation (doctor’s note or note from the college) is submitted on time.

2. Behavior: Students in the Medical Careers Program are guests of Bryn Mawr Hospital. It is expected that students will conduct themselves in a respectful and professional manner at all times. No: loud noise, inappropriate language, sitting on the floor in the classroom or in the hallways or horseplay in any part of the hospital. There are patients at Bryn Mawr Hospital coping with real problems. Medical Careers students should never be a source of negative distraction. The staff is genuinely excited to have Medical Careers students at BMH. It is up to each of you to make sure this feeling continues. Unprofessional student behavior will result in loss of clinical privileges and possible dismissal from the program.

3. Clinical Rotations: Only students in academic good standing may attend clinicals. A student with a D or F average or with any discipline issues, lack of professionalism demonstrated in the classroom, excessive absences, or incomplete assignments will lose the privilege to participate in clinicals.

4. Dress Code: Hospital ID badges and dress code are required each day. Repeated violations will result in the loss of clinical privileges. It is expected that students will arrive at Bryn Mawr Hospital in dress code. Students will not attend clinicals if any part of the dress code or hospital ID badge is missing. Being professional starts with looking that way.

5. General Rules: a. No gum, especially on clinical days. Food should be eaten before class. Drinks are fine, but not in the skills lab or on clinical rotations. b. No cell phone calls or texting. Phones must be on silent and placed face down on the table. Videos or pictures are absolutely NOT allowed in class or clinical areas. c. No smoking on hospital grounds or off site. d. No driving to the hospital; under certain circumstances exceptions may be made only if the student requests advanced permission and has a note from a parent. This is a liability issue and students must have advanced parental permission. e. No horseplay or congregating in hospital hallways. f. No loud conversations in the hallway and NEVER discuss clinical rotation experiences in public areas, including your bus ride back to school or with your classmates/friends/family. Patient confidentiality is the law and if violated, the student will be dismissed from the program immediately. g. Treat all hospital employees, patients and property with respect and courtesy.
