Provide a printed or handwritten copy of the solutions for the problems below. You may use Excel or Word for the tables, EWB, Altium or other software as a drawing tool. Draw logic diagrams, not circuit diagrams. If you choose to manually draw the diagrams or the tables use a ruler and draw the gates carefully (template is recommended). Marks will be deducted for not using a straight edge or for gates that are not drawn with proper care.

Due date, due time and other hand-in information is on the course web site. Provide a hard copy only. Please do not email the assignment.

Include a cover sheet with the assignment number, date, your name, the instructor’s name and the course code (DIGI-210). Marks will be deducted for a missing cover sheet and missing details from the cover sheet.

Problem: Harvested potatoes must be stored properly to prevent them from rotting, sprouting, freezing and drying out. For long-term storage during the winter months, uniform temperatures must be maintained at approximately 3 degrees with a relative humidity of approximately 85%.

A circuit is needed to control the temperature and the humidity of a potato storage facility. This facility is long and narrow so there are two sets of sensors located within the pile of potatoes: one set of humidity and temperature sensors is on the North side and the other set is on the South side. There is one centralized heater with independent control of the heat, fan and humidifier. Air is blown up through grills in the floor, flowing through the potatoes to maintain the perfect storage climate.

The farmer had determined that if only one of the two temperature sensors reports a temperature below 3 degrees only the fan should turn on to recirculate the air. If both temperature sensors report a temperature below 3 degrees the fan and the heater should turn on until one or both sensors detects a temperature above 3 degrees. If the humidity is below the threshold of one or both sensors then the humidifier should be turned on but the fan must also be turned on at the same time. The fan must be turned on whenever the heater and/or the humidifier are turned on.

For this problem assume all sensors, and the heater, humidifier and fan operate on a digital logic high system. If the temperature drops below the preset value the output of the sensor is a logic high. Do not design the interface with the devices: use appropriately drawn and labeled switches for the inputs and probes for the outputs.
