English Conversation 4 Final Speaking Exam
Unit 6 – Defining Relative Clauses This conversation will be completed twice. Use the speaking activity 6-3 to help you prepare for your exam. Ask a question about the person, place, or thing shown in the example. Be sure to use the appropriate relative clause.
A: What makes a good teacher? (Ask a question – 1 pt.) B: I think a good teacher is someone who listens to students. Unit 8 – Third Conditional This conversation will be completed twice. Use the handout from class to help you prepare for your exam. Ask about a past experience and use the third conditional to imagine what you could have done differently.
A: When I was in high school, I really failed an exam. (Use the given prompt to describe a past experience from your own life – 1 pt.) A: If I had studied harder, I could have passed that class. (Use the third condition to answer the question - correct condition 1 pt., correct use of modal + present perfect 1 pt.) A: What about you? (Use a transition – 1 pt.) A: Have you ever failed an exam? (Use the present perfect to ask about past experience– 1 pt.) B: When I was in middle school, I failed a math exam. (Describe a specific past experience – 1 pt.) B: If I had had more interest in math, I would have studied harder. (Use the third condition to answer the question - correct condition 1 pt., correct use of modal + present perfect 1 pt.)
Unit 9 – Past modals for speculating This conversation will be completed twice. I will provide you with a situation and then you should use a past modal speculate with certainty and less certainty.
A: Mark is late today. (State the problem in the example – 1 pt.) B: He must have gotten stuck in traffic. (Use a past modal to speculate with certainty – 1 pt.) B: He could have had a problem at home. (Use a past modal to speculate with less certainty – 1 pt.) B: I don’t know. What do you think? (Use a transition – 1 pt.) B: He must have overslept. (Use a past modal to speculate with certainty – 1 pt.) B: He could have just missed the bus or something. (Use a past modal to speculate with less certainty – 1 pt.)
Unit 11 – Future Continuous This conversation will be completed twice. Use the future time given to answer your question.
A: What will you be doing at this time tomorrow? (Ask a question using the future continuous and the future time provided – 1 pt.) B: Hmmm, I definitely won’t be relaxing around the house at this time tomorrow. (Use the future continuous to say what you will/won’t be doing – 1 pt.) B: Oh yeah, I will be going to class!
