Dear Class of 2021: Please read the instructions below regarding CPR Certification.
1) You must become certified or be recertified by an organization that provides either American Red Cross (ARC) or American Heart Association (AHA) CPR Certification. Please confirm this before paying for and starting training. No other form of CPR certification is acceptable. Please note that the training must have a live test out component, but there may be an online course component as well.

. You should look for BLS for Healthcare Providers

. You should look for BLS/CPR for Healthcare
2) Both ARC and AHA provide certification which remains valid for 2 years from the date of completion. In order to ensure you are certified appropriately during your Student Pharmacist training, you must be certified between September 1 and December 31, 2017. For Class of 2021, your CPR certification must carry you through to the end of Summer 2019, and then you will need to get re-certified for another two year period to be able to cover your third and fourth years of training. If you complete the training earlier, your certification may expire during the school year preventing you from completing required courses, rotations and participating in some activities. The same problem could arise if you do not complete certification before the December deadline and may prevent you from being able to submit rotation preferences when applicable
3) You are responsible for locating an acceptable provider and for the cost of training. The websites above are excellent places to find a low cost provider convenient to you, as are local Fire Departments and community organizations. Some employers also provide training. There may be programs available to you on campus after the beginning of the semester, but that information has not yet been finalized.
4) Your successful completion of CPR training must be documented by an authentic certificate or card. Many providers give you a certificate or card as soon as you complete the course while others provide a certificate or card in the mail. Ask which you will receive before you take the course, particularly if you are seeking certification right before the December deadline (not recommended).
5) Legible color scans or photographs of original certificates or card in pdf format must be uploaded to the CORE/ELMS portal on or before December 31, 2017 so the School has a record of completion. CORE/ELMS is the program that is used for Experiential Learning rotations and assignments. Failure to upload has potentially serious consequences including delayed graduation and additional tuition costs. Instructions on how to upload a current copy of your certificate or card will be sent in a separate email closer to the beginning of the semester.
6) You are responsible for ensuring that your CPR training is complete and your certification up-to-date in CORE/ELMS during the school year and for your IPPE and APPE rotations.
7) If you graduate on time (4 years) you will need to be certified competent in CPR twice (during your first and third year). If you graduate late for any reason you may require an additional certification period.
Sincerely, Cherokee Layson-Wolf Associate Dean of Student Affairs Department of Pharmacy Practice and Sciences 20 N Pine St., N 309F Baltimore, MD 21201 410 706 1067
