8. Objectives/Lesson Outcomes:

A. students will gain an understanding of the historical context of the time period of the play B. students will gain an understanding of how to read a play (including stage notes) C. students will gain an understanding of vocabulary words in context D. students will be able to write paragraphs that pertain to topics that are in the play E. students will research the time period prior to, during, and after reading F. students will participate actively in speaking and listening as they read aloud and discuss the content of the play G. students will be able to analyze the motives of characters within the play H. students will be able to make predictions and inferences 9. Materials and Resources Required: A. Technology (include location and equipment):

1. Brain Pop (there are quizzes that go with the play) 2. Nettrekker (there are research activities) 3. Nettrekker (there are informative articles that include research and critical reading skills) 4. Zoomerang (test) 5. United Streaming

B. Printed Materials:

1. Prentice Hall literature text book 2. overhead transparencies 3. charts on the board 4. notes

C. Other Supplies:

1. video of the play 2. DVD

10. Lesson Procedures:

A. Begin with an introduction on the play. B. Give the students clues as to what might occur. C. Ask the students to come up with a plausible scenario based on the clues. D. Ask the students to discuss these scenarios. E. Assign a written paragraph, asking them to describe one item of personal value that they would take with them if they were to go into hiding for an unknown period of time and for what reasons…exclude items like food, water, pets, family members, etc. F. Use the Nettrekker program to gain interest and give information about the historical context of the time period. G. Discuss the play daily as the students read various parts (but make sure they all have equivalent opportunities to read). H. Use the Brain Pop quiz as a warm-up or as a graded quiz based on reading and history. I. Use the Nettrekker to give a summative test. J. Assign an essay (in class or at home) that details some aspect of the play and the characters that had overcome or fallen under pressure. 11. Modifications for Differentiated Instruction: A. Remediation:

1. Use Activity period to help students who are struggling.

B. Enrichment:

1. Use the United Streaming program to show segments of Anne Frank, the Anne Frank house, and the Anne Frank museum.

12. Student Assessment

A. Allow students to take a survey on Zoomerang and post the results.
