Competition Phase General Information

1. Venues & Dates

2. Categories of Competition

2.1 Western Dance --- Folk and national** 2.2 Chinese Dance --- Classic, folk and tribal 2.3 Oriental Dance --- Dance of Asia and other regions, excluding Chinese Dance and Western Dance 2.4 Modern Dance--- Dance with creative elements 2.5 Children Dance --- Children Oriented; the dates of competition will be 14 and 15 January 200 8 (Monday and Tuesday) 2.6 Jazz Dance --- including Broadway, Hip hop, Tap**, Classical, Creative, etc; the dates of competition will be 11 January 200 8 (Friday ) and 29 January 200 8 (Tuesday ) . 2.7 DanceSport – including Cha Cha Cha, Waltz, and Jive Dance; the date of competition will be 21 February 200 8 ( Thursday ); venue will be Tai Kok Tsui Sports Centre (address: 7/F. , Tai Kok Tsui Municipal Services Building, 63 Fuk Tsun Street, Tai Kok Tsui, Kowloon)

** The participants who wear buckle shoes or tap shoes are required to provide wooden board to

1 protect the floor mat at the venue. Failure to comply with this will lead to disqualification. 3. Conditions of Entry

3.1 The A.M. session, P.M. session and whole day session of the same school shall be treated as 3 individual units when enter ing for the competition. Combining units are not allowed and shall lead to disqualification (Exception: A unit with 6 or fewer classes may combine with another unit of the same school.)

3.2 In DanceSport Competition, each team will be composed of two students from the same school.

3.3 Schools staging upper primary pupils in lower primary division competitions ( except in Dance S port) shall lead to disqualification of all their competition results in the Festival.

3.4 Schools should clear all copyright issues related to their dances. Infringement of copyright will lead to disqualification.

3.5 Conditions for number of dancers, number of teams and time limit are as follows:

2 Modern Dance

3.6 In DanceSport Competition, a ll teams of the same school will perform at the same time but will be judged individually.

3.7 Entry

Schools are requested to complete the Master Entry Form and the Individual Dance Entry Form(s) (one form for each dance) or the DanceSport Entry Form. Photocopies of entry forms are acceptable. A fee of $180 for each dance or $180 for each team (Dance S port) entered will be charged. Payments should be made by a crossed cheque payable to the “ HONG KONG SCHOOLS DANCE ASSOCIATION” . The application forms and cheque should be sent to the following address on or before Wednesday, 31 October 200 7:

3.8 Officials

Each participating school should nominate one teacher to assist in official duties on the day of competition or on another day as assigned by the organiser.

3.9 Participating schools are encouraged to stay behind for the entire programme as this provides a good opportunity for cross-fertilization of dance experience among teachers and students.

3.10 The organizer reserves the rights to present the dances of all participating schools in any formats including but not limited to performance, text, audio and visual record.

3.11 Unauthorized videoing, digital or flash photography are strictly prohibited at the competition venues. Participating schools should remind their teachers, pupils, parents and supporters beforehand to closely observe this house rule.

4. Criteria for Adjudication

4.1 All Types of Dance

4.1.1 Marks will be deducted for exceeding the time limit and/or insufficient number of dancers for each dance. 1 mark will be deducted for 1 person less or for 1 minute overtime (less than one minute will also be counted as one minute) and so on.

4.1.2 If costumes and props are used, they must be appropriate in style and for bringing out the effect of performance.

4.1.3 Marks will be deducted for poor quality of background music.

3 4.1.4 The adjudication panel will comprise five adjudicators. The mark of a performance shall be the average of the remaining three marks after discarding the highest and the lowest.

4.2 Chinese Dance, Oriental Dance and Western Dance

4.3 Modern Dance

4.4 Children Dance (for Lower Primary Division only)

4.5 Jazz Dance (for Secondary School Division only)

4.6 DanceSport- Cha Cha Cha, Jive, Waltz

4.6.1 Structure (design of sequence; choice of music; alignment and direction) 20% 4.6.2 Characteristics (basic techniques; hold; footwork; use of music; hip movement technique and weight transfer; rises and falls; flexed knees and expressiveness) 40% 4.6.3 Power of expression (leads and follows; dynamic quality; communication and cooperation; body and movement techniques; sense of rhythm and expression) and Performance 40%

5. Awards and Souvenirs

5.1 Individual Dance Award

5.1.1 Honours Award*# will be awarded to a dance scoring 85 marks and above.

5.1.2 Highly Commended Award*# will be awarded to a dance scoring 80 to 84.9 marks.

5.1.3 Commended Award*☆ will be awarded to a dance scoring 75 to 79.9 marks.

5.1.4 Choreography Award△ will be given to choreographers attaining a high standard. (Choreography Award Competitors must fill in the choreography application form which will be sent later.) * A certificate will be awarded to each pupil for the dance winning Commended Award or above. # A trophy will be awarded to the dance winning the Highly Commended Award or above. ☆A certificate will be awarded to the dance winning the Commended Award.

5.2 Team Awards

Awards will be given to the top 3 scoring schools of each division (i.e. primary and secondary) in each type of dance. The table shown below shall be referred when calculating the total scores. To get the team award, a school has to enter at least two dances in the same type of dance. If there is a tie in the total score, the school with higher aggregate marks in all dances will win (The scores of Children Dance, Jazz Dance and DanceSport, however, will not be counted).
