JOB DESCRIPTION: Reporting to the executive director (ED), the Comptroller will define the process and implement the infrastructure/systems needed to support substantial growth over the next three to five years. S/he will continue to build and manage effective and streamlined administrative/financial systems, including financial, accounting, legal, information technology (IT), human resources (HR), and physical infrastructure. As a member of the senior management team, the Comptroller will be involved in strategic planning, evaluation, and professional development initiatives, as well as planning for WCIL’s expansion of new programs and sites.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:  Develops and maintains financial management policies and procedures that align with the WCIL’s mission, ensuring that WCIL is in compliance with all applicable accounting standards and best practices with respect to accounting for non-profits and community foundations.  Prepares monthly and quarterly financial statements and financial analysis for WCIL management, the WCIL Board of Director’s Finance Committee, and the entire Board of Directors.  Oversees the preparation of the annual operating and capital budgets for WCIL, and provides routine budget vs. actual reports for WCIL staff and Board. Assists in the development of long range strategic and financial plans.  Coordinates the investment functions of WCIL by working with the Finance Committee of the Board to ensure compliance with Board approved investment policies. Coordinates the timely reporting of investment activity to donors and fundholders, which provide pertinent information about the performance of their investments with WCIL.  Supervises the Accounting, Accounts Payable, and Gift Processing functions. Manages the accounting department staff to enable the achievement of WCIL goals in a manner that is consistent with the mission of the WCIL. Responsible for training and continuing education of staff, and the monitoring and evaluation of their performance.  Manages WCIL’s employee benefits programs, including health and welfare and retirement plan benefits. Works with benefits providers to ensure compliance with all federal and state regulations regarding employee benefits. Participates in analysis and decision-making regarding NMCF’s employee benefits.  Handles risk-management for WCIL, working with insurance agents to ensure proper liability coverage for WCIL activities.  Oversees the annual audit and IRS 990 tax return process for the Foundation.  Participates in long-range and annual development (fundraising) planning.  Participates in budget preparation for grant applications, and provides information and support for financial reporting to grantors.

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:  Bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent required; Master's degree (in accounting or business) highly preferred.  Certified Public Accountant preferred.  Five years or more of nonprofit accounting experience required.  Five years or more in Director/Management level accounting experience required.  Demonstrated experience with the following accounting software: QuickBooks, QuickBooks online, Sage 100 and Paychex.  Extensive experience and advanced knowledge of Excel and other Microsoft Office software required.

COMPETENCIES:  Superior oral and written communication skills, the highest level of financial and analytical skills and an extensive knowledge of financial policies, practices and systems are required. Excellent organizational and managerial skills; ability to provide guidance to others.  Ability to exercise good judgment and take initiative with broadly defined guidelines and complex procedures.  Ability to work on complex assignments where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.  Familiarity with various types of investments and charitable trusts, and the appropriate accounting reporting required, is strongly preferred.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE SKILLS (but not required to be considered for an interview):  Experience working with people with disabilities.  Knowledge and understanding of the concepts of the Independent Living philosophy.  Experience working at or with a social services, preferably in a nonprofit agency working with people with disabilities or related services.
