HUGGINS Associate Professor of NT and Greek Midwestern Baptist theological Seminary Kansas City, MO 64118 [email protected] If one wants to enter into the old discussion of the “dying and rising” gods, one must resign oneself to the idea of having to straddle the line separating real scholarship and pseudo-scholarly rubbish.2 It comes with the territory. Claims that Prometheus is to be counted among the so- called “crucified saviors” hail almost exclusively from the rubbish side. As to the scholarly side, Prometheus’s name only appears once in the cumulative index of James George Frazer’s classic multi-volume work, The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion (1935), and then only in relation to his theft of fire from Olympus in the chapter “The Origin of 1 Aeschylus (LCL; vol. 1 of 2; Cambridge, MA: trans. 6. ‘Temple of Knowledge and Reason’: culture and politics at 3 Blackfriars Road, Surrey As we have seen in the previous chapters, by the early nineteenth century the very name of the Crown and Anchor tavern clearly signposted its political associations and identity. The tavern’s longstanding presence on the metropolitan landscape, combined with its early liberal-aristocratic connections, helped to secure its place as a bastion for London’s politicised middling classes. If the Crown and Anchor tavern had come to symbolise the moderate and measured opposition to the political landscape during the Reform agitation of late 1830, events south of the Thames signalled that plebeian radicals with more pressing intent had found a new home. On the evening of 8 November, a crowd of almost 2000 assembled at the Rotunda, Richard Carlile’s newly leased premises in Blackfriars Road, Surrey, during a period of intense unrest in the Reform crisis. The magistrates of the city, wrote one contemporary observer, were ‘all of the opinion’ that the ‘heated harangues’ at the Rotunda were the source of the rioting that gripped the city.1 Their attention on the building was also fuelled by rumoured plans of riots during the King’s expected visit to the city, and of assassination plots against Prime Minister, Lord Wellington, and Home Secretary, Robert Peel. Carlile was also well aware of the focus of the authorities on his new building. Anticipating a riot on 8 November, he reportedly instructed the cleaner at the Rotunda to make six staves out of the rails of some staircases to ‘imitate those of Constables’, paint them tricoloured and inscribe them with the word ‘Rotunda’.2 Whether Carlile really intended the staves to be used in defending the premises or whether they served a purely provocative symbolic purpose is unclear. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract This paper seeks to scrutinise the debate about the historicity of Jesus and identify aspects that merit critical reflection by New Testament scholars. Although the question is regularly dismissed, it is a salient one that was formative in the development of the discipline, and has become increasingly visible since the turn of the century. However, the terminology employed by the protagonists is problematic, and the conventional historiography of the debate misleading. The characteristic tropes evident in the contributions are also indicative of substantive issues within the discipline of New Testament studies itself. Many of us instinctively sense the truth and beauty contained in the world's ancient texts and sacred stories, but when we try to approach the myths themselves we often find them bizarre, circuitous, and difficult to fathom. Unless we come from an upbringing within a traditional culture unsullied by extensive contact with the implacable spread of "modern western civilization," we find ourselves cut off from the sacred stories which were given to our distant ancestors for their benefit and guidance.
