Durham Middle School Junior Beta Club

Durham Middle School is proud to be a part of the National Beta Club organization, a club that promotes leadership, scholarship, service, and character. Membership in this club is by invitation only, and is based on academic achievement along with teacher recommendations for the areas of leadership and character. Since its inception here at Durham, the club has been open to seventh and eighth grade students only; however, beginning in the spring of 2012, we began inviting sixth grade students to join.

The requirements for receiving an invitation to join the Durham Junior Beta Club are as follows:

 Composite score of 88%ile or higher on the ITBS. We use the 5th grade ITBS for sixth grade students and the 7th grade ITBS for any seventh or eighth grade students. The ITBS is used because it is a nationally normed test.

 High academic achievement (GPA): Academic scholarship is an ongoing requirement for all new and existing members. To that end, the following GPAs are required –

o 6th grade students for initial invitations/induction – 3.8 (with the new semester grading, this means no more than one B on the report card)

o 7th/8th grade students for initial invitation/induction – 3.8 (again, this means only one B on the report card)

o ALL students are required to maintain a 3.8 GPA once inducted into the club

 Teacher recommendations (3). Once a student has been identified as a possible inductee, three teacher recommendations are required focusing on the student’s leadership skills and character. The recommendation forms are solely the responsibility of the individual student to take to their chosen teachers and to follow-up to make sure the recommendations have been submitted to the sponsors.

After a student has met all membership requirements, he/she will be invited to join the Durham Junior Beta Club and will be inducted.
