The Britain Israel Communications and Research Centre (BICOM) is seeking to appoint a research analyst.

This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the research activities of an organisation with a reputation for producing high-quality research and analysis about Israel and the Middle East. You will have the opportunity to work on strategic assessments, research briefings, a Daily Brief read by thousands of people in the UK and abroad, as well as Fathom – our successful and highly respected academic journal with 150,000 readers around the world.

The job will appeal to an applicant with a relevant degree or experience in the field of international relations, Middle East history or politics who enjoys working on high- profile issues and has excellent understanding of Israel and the Middle East.

Working closely with the Director of Research and Editor of Fathom, candidates should be adept at dealing with immediate issues in a fast-paced news environment. The post requires first class writing and editing skills as well as knowledge of social media platforms.

JOB DESCRIPTION - MAIN DUTIES OF THE POST

• To work as part of the research team in the production of BICOM outputs. To assist in the preparation and write-up of BICOM branded publications – including daily brief, BICOM Strategic Assessments, and externally written content. • To work as an editorial assistant in the production of the quarterly journal Fathom. To assist in the commissioning, editing, proofing, photograph selection and - in liaison with the communications team - the promotion of Fathom. To help in the organisation of ‘Fathom Forums’ and seminars, the maintenance of a Fathom distribution list, operating the Fathom website CMS (uploading, editing, checking, monitoring comments), Facebook and Twitter accounts. • To aid the research team and the CEO in forward planning, keeping up to date with think-tank activity and current trends in foreign affairs, and general research tasks. • To produce written and verbal briefings for the CEO, media team and the BICOM staff as a whole. • To manage and maintain an up-to-date research contact database.

PERSON SPECIFICATION - COMPETENCES/SKILLS REQUIRED

Analysing evidence and thinking strategically • Understands BICOM priorities, wider political and policy environments. • Skilled in undertaking reliable research under pressure; strong analytical skills. • Understands policies and issues and can summarise key components. • Assesses risks, identifies potential negative issues. • Predicts likely areas of focus and ensures appropriate briefing is prepared. • Reviews progress and events to ensure that lessons are learned. • A problem solver, tenacious, highly organised and able to juggle priorities. • BA degree, 2:1 or higher.

Managing projects • Demonstrates initiative to lead projects in order to deliver outcomes. • Excellent organisational skills • Can work effectively under pressure to immovable deadlines. • Demonstrates determination and an ability to deal with competing priorities effectively and calmly.

Communicating • An excellent communicator with proven writing and editing skills. • Has a clear understanding of the purpose of strategic communication and long term planning. • Promotes effective information sharing. • Contributes to meetings to help achieve clear results and move business forward.

Desirable skills • Masters degree in relevant subject. • Personal experience of Israel e.g. through study or travel. • Experience of working with political or media audiences. • Good social media skills. • Hebrew or Arabic.
