Pancake Day

Have you ever heard of Pancake Day? In Olney, a small town in England, they celebrate this festival every year. So what do you do on Pancake Day? Eat pancakes, right? Not really. In some places in England they do have pancake-eating competitions, but not in Olney. 5 Here things are a little different. Every year on the last Tuesday in February at exactly 11:55, there is a pancake race. The race has special rules*. Only women can run in the race and they have to be at least 18 years old. Every woman must wear a skirt and an apron*. They have to run 400 meters from the market square to the church* carrying a hot 10 frying pan* with a pancake in it! The race started because of a funny story. It was 1445, and a woman from Olney was making pancakes. Suddenly she heard the church bell ring. She was in such a hurry to get to church that she forgot to put down her frying pan. She ran all the way to church carrying her frying pan with a pancake in it. The people of Olney 15 thought that this was so funny that they decided to have a pancake race every year. So, if you are in England around the end of February, make sure you go to Olney. This race sounds like a lot of fun!
