As Part Two: Reading comprehension. Directions: For each numbered blank in the following passage, there are four choices marked, A、B、C, and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET 1. Passage one As a medium of exchange, money permits the separation of exchange into the two distinct acts of buying and selling, without requiring the seller to purchase goods from the person who buys his products, or vice versa. Hence producers who know they will be paid in money, can concentrate on finding the most suitable outlet (te8A) for their goods, while buyers who will pay in money, can concentrate on finding the cheapest market for the things they wish to purchase. Specialization, which is vital to an advanced economy, is encouraged, because people whose output is not a complete product but only a part of one in which many others are involved can be paid an amount equivalent to their share of the product. Another advantage of money is that it is a measure of va1ue—that is, it serves as a unit in terms of which the relative values of different products can be expressed. In a barter economy it would be necessary to determine how many plates were worth one hundred weight of cotton, or how many pens should be exchanged for a ton of coal, which would be a difficult and time- consuming (费时的) task. The process of establishing relative values would have to be undertaken for every act of exchange, according to what products were being offered against one another, and according to the two parties' desires and preferences. If I am trying to barter fish for bananas, for example, a lot would depend on whether the person willing to exchange bananas is or is not keen on fish. Thirdly, money acts as a store of wealth. It is difficult to imagine saving under a barter system. No one engaged on only one stage in the manufacture of a product could save part of his output, since he would be producing nothing complete. Even when a person actually produced a complete product the difficulties would be overwhelming. Most products deteriorate fairly rapidly, either physically or in value, as a result of long storage; even if storage were possible, the practice of storing products for years on end would involve obvious disadvantages—imagine a coal-miner attempting to save enough coal, which of course is his product, to keep him for life. If wealth could not be saved, or only with great difficulty, future needs could not be provided for, or capital accumulated to raise productivity. 1. Using money as a medium of exchange means that______. A. you have to sell something in order to buy something B. you have to buy something in order to sel1 something C. you don't have to buy something in order to se1l something D. the seller and the purchaser are the same person 2. Specialization is encouraged because______. A. people can use their money to buy whatever they want B. people do not need to make a complete product for exchange
2 C. people make a great contribution to the manufacture of a product D. people cannot use their money to buy whatever they want 3. A barter economy is one in which______. A. value is decided by weight B. value is decided by number C. money is used and goods are not exchanged D. goods are exchanged and money is not used 4. If one had to save products instead of money,______. A. this would need years of practice B. coal, for example, would 1ose its value C. they could not be stored for years on end D. many products would lose their value 5. How many advantages of money are mentioned in this passage? A. Two B. Three C. Four D. Five Passage Two A new era is upon us. Call it what you will. the service economy, the information age, the knowledge society. It is all translated to a fundamental change in the way we work. Already we've partly been there. The percentage of people who earn their living by making things has fallen dramatica1ly in the Western World. Today the majority of jobs in America, Europe and Japan (two thirds or more in many or these countries) are in the service industry, and the number is on the rise. More women are in the work force than ever before. There are more part-time jobs. More people are self-employed. But the breadth of the economic transformation can't be measured by numbers alone, because it is also giving rise to a radical new way of thinking about the nature of work itself. Long-held notions about jobs and careers, the skills needed to succeed, even the relation between individuals and employers -- all these are being changed. We have only to look behind us to get some sense of what may lie ahead. No one looking ahead 20 years possibly could have foreseen the ways in which a single invention, the chip ( 集成 电 路 ), would transform our world thanks to its applications in personal computers, digital communications and factory robots. Tomorrow's achievements in biotechnology, artificial intelligence or even some still unimagined technology could produce a similar wave of dramatic changes. But one thing is certain: information and knowledge will become even more vital, and the people who possess it, whether they work in manufacturing or services, will have the advantage and produce the wealth. Computer knowledge will become as basic a requirement as the ability to read and write. The ability to solve problems by applying information instead of performing routine tasks will be above all else. If you cast your mind ahead 10 years, information services will be predominant. It will be the way you do your job. 1. A characteristic of the information age is that______. A. the service industry is relying more and more on the female work force B. manufacturing industries are steadily increasing C. people find it harder to earn a living by working in factories D. most of the job opportunities can now be found in service industry 2. One of the great changes brought about by the know1edge society is that______. A. the difference between the emp1oyee and the employer has become insignificant B. people's traditional concepts about work no longer hold true
3 C. most peop1e have to take part-time jobs D. people have to change their jobs from time to time 3. By referring to computers and other inventions, the author means to say that______. A. people should be able to respond quickly to the advancement of technology B. future achievements in technology will bring about inconceivable dramatic changes C. the importance of high technology has been overlooked D. computer science will play a leading role in the future information services 4. The future will probably belong to those who______. A. possess and know how to make use of information B. give full play to their brain potential C. involve themselves in the service industry D. cast their minds ahead instead of looking back 5. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Computers and the Knowledge Society B. Service Industries in Modern Society C. Features and Implications of the New Era D. Rapid Advancement of Information Technology Passage Three The more women and minorities make their way into the ranks of management, the more they seem to want to talk about things formerly judged to be best left unsaid. The newcomers also tend to see office matters with a fresh eye, in the process sometimes coming up with critical analyses of the forces that shape everyone's experience in the organization. Consider the novel view of Harvey Coleman of Atlanta on the subject of getting ahead. Coleman is black. He spent 11 years with IBM, half of them working in managements in management development, and now serves as a consultant to the likes of AT&T, Coca—Cola, and Merth. Coleman says that based on what he's seen at bi2 companies, he weighs the different elements that make for long-term career success as follows: performance counts a mere l0%, image, 30%, and exposure, a full 60%. Coleman concludes that excellent performance is so common these days that while doing your work well may win you pay increases, it won't secure you the big promotion. He finds that advancement more often depends on how many people know you and your work, and how high they are. Ridiculous beliefs? Not to many people, especially many women and members of minority races who, like Coleman, feel the scales ( 障眼物) have dropped from their eyes. "Women and blacks in organizations work under false beliefs ', says Kaleel Jamison, a New York-based management consultant who helps corporations deal with these issues. "They think that if you work hard, you'll get ahead——that someone in authority will reach down and give you a promotion," she adds. "Most women and blacks are so frightened that people will think they've gotten ahead because of their sex or color that they play down (使…不突出) their visibility." Her advice to those folks: learn the ways that white males have traditionally used to find their way into the spotlight. 1. According to the passage, "things formerly judged to be best left unsaid" (Line 2,Para.1) probably refers to"______". A. criticisms that shape everyone's experience B. the opinions which contradict the established beliefs
4 C. the tendencies that help the newcomers to see office matters with a fresh eye D. the ideas which usually come up with new ways of management in the organization 2. A. let your superiors know how good you are B. project a favorable image to the people around you C. work as a consultant to your superiors D. perform well your tasks given by your superiors 3. The reason why women and blacks play down their visibility is that they______. A. know that someone in authority will reach down and give them a promotion B. want to give people the impression that they work under false beliefs C. don't want people to think that their promotions were due to sex or color D. believe they can get promoted by reason of their sex or color 4. The author is of the opinion that Coleman's beliefs are______. A. biased B. popular C. insightful D. superficial Passage Four In 1985, the Coca-Cola company made the decision to change the formula( 配 方 ) of its leading soft drink. The change was based on the findings of many market studies. These studies had shown that the general response to the new product was good. However, the change of the traditional Coca-Cola by New Coke was rejected by the majority of drinkers. In fact, the company had to step back and restart production of the old formula of Coca-Cola. The most important reason why New Coke was rejected was the emotional relationship that existed between drinkers and the old soft drink formula. Drinking Coca-Cola had become a tradition for many people over its 99 years of existence. The change made by the company was not only in Coke's formula but also in the traditional values and memories that it represented to the drinkers. "We had taken away more than the product Coca-Cola. We had taken away a little part of them and their past". The drinkers rejected this "improvement" because "they believed that Coke stood for traditional value, ... so they felt betrayed when the product changed completely overnight". Although a lot of research was done by Coca-Cola Company, it didn't show the depth of drinkers' emotion for the product. The studies took many forms, but none of the tests was able to measure the degree of personal and emotional reactions caused by the disappearance of the old, traditional Coca-Cola. The weakness of the research was that it was mainly quantitative in form. The result was only numbers that could not show the deep meaning the product had for many people. A more extensive study focusing on the qualitative aspects of the change would perhaps have been able to demonstrate the close relationship existing between drinkers and product. 1. Coca--Cola company changed the formula in l985 because______. A. it was rejected by the majority of drinkers B. its market studies supported the change in the formula C. it carried out many market research for expansion D. it simply felt the need to make the change 2. According to the passage, the drinkers rejected New Coke because of______. A. late response to the market by Coca-Cola company B. reproduction of Coca--Cola's old drink formula

A. Research by Coca-Co1a considered emotional factors. B. Coca-Cola did not carry out sufficient research. C. Research by Coca-Cola was quantitative rather than qualitative. D. Research by Coca-Cola was both quantitative and qualitative. 5. The author of the article clearly indicates that______. A. the weakness of the research cou1d have been removed B. Coca-Cola should have measured the quantitative factors more carefully C. Coca-Cola should have done a more extensive qualitative study D. a slower change of the product might have improved the sales of the company Part three: Cloze Directions: There is one passage in this part. 6 five questions. Write your answers on the ANSWER SHEET 2. Over two hundred years ago,Adam Smith Introduced some ideas which were to bring about a world revolution. If we enjoy high standard of living In modern society,we owe much to this Scottish economist and philosopher . If we enjoy driving In shiny sleek motor cars , wearing fashionable shoes,or flying away to distant places for exciting holidays,we should perhaps give an occasional vote of thanks to the man who made It all possible. What then was Adam Smith’s contribution?Like so many ideas winch have earth-shattering effects, his was a disarmingly simple notion. He watched workers practicing their craft of pin making . One man would heat the strip of metal , stretch it out , cut off an appropriate length, shape it,cool it and finally smooth and shine it.Smith drew attentions the advantages which could be gained if these various tasks were performed by different workers .Let one be responsible for keeping the brazier(火盆) glowing and preparing the metal. Another for stretching and cutting. Another for shaping. Another for finishing. He described the technique as the Division of Labor, whereby workers perform short work-cycles, repeating the same actions again and again and again. Smith convinced the world that specialization could solve specialization could solve the problems of poverty and want. What was the result? The Industrial Revolution. Specialization became the order of the day. Productivity was increased to an incredible degree. For Britain, where the revolution started, there was an upsurge (3gIJ1#) in prosperity that made us the richest country in the nineteenth century world. British trains and railway lines spread out like a spider's web across the world, opening up the great continents of America, Asia, Africa and Australia. British ships, built of iron and steel, were used to carry the new bountiful( 急剧上升) cargoes (including human beings) from every corner of the world, to every corner of the world. The revolution is not over. It is still with us, but now it is a world-wide phenomenon. Everywhere, factories producing large numbers of more or less identical units are in continuous production. What were called mass-production lines yesterday are ca1led robotic production lines today. If anything, the pace of change is increasing. And if these techniques have brought us prosperity, they have also brought us a trail of misery in overcrowded towns, boring jobs and, worst of all unemployment. 1. Why is the name of Adam Smith remembered? 2. Adam Smith introduced a simple notion that labor______. 3. According to Adam Smith, poverty could be dealt with______. 4. What happened to Britain in the nineteenth century? 5. What problems have been caused by robotic production lines? Part five: E-C Translation: Directions: In this section there is a passage in English. Translate the five sentences underlined into Chinese and write your translation on the ANSWER SHEET 2. (1) China and the United States signed a historic agreement yesterday that will pave the way for Beijing to enter the World Trade Organization (WTO), l3 years after it applied to join. While Beijing has still to complete negotiations with other WTO members, the US was the toughest party to deal with. The agreement, and after six grueling days and nights of negotiations, opens the way for China to join the world's principle trading body and is the mainland's most important economic event since December l979. When it switched from state planning and isolationism to reform and the open-door policy. Zhang Ligang, chief executive of e-Long com, an Internet start-
7 up firm that was illegal when it was founded last week but become legal yesterday with the lifting of a ban on foreign investment in the Net, summed up the day. "If we say that Deng Xiaoping opened China to the world in 1979, we can say that this time China has entered the world." (2) The chief US negotiator, Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky, described the deal as "profoundly important", "absolutely comprehensive" and an excellent one for American business. At a meeting with Ms Barshevfsky yesterday afternoon, President Jiang Zemin called the deal "good, historic and realistic, and a win-win for both sides which showed that both countries saw the issue from a strategic view point. China's entry into the WTO will have profound ramifications for the country, binding her to international trading rules and encouraging foreign firms to invest by providing a system less based on rule by the idiosyncrasies of an official and more on transparent laws and regulations. It will accelerate a process of closing money-losing and over-manned state companies and moving labor and capital into market-driven businesses. In the short term, it will drive up unemployment as inefficient, capital-intensive state industries are shut down. (3) It also marks a vital victory for Prime Minister Zhu Rongji, the main proponent, along with Mr Jiang, of China's membership, who offered a similar deal in Washington in April. The war in Yugoslavia, in which Beijing sided with Sebia, and the Nato bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade, froze negotiations from until September. (4) For Mr Zhu, WTO membership will serve as a motor for reform of state companies, banking, insurance, securities and other industries. At a news conference just before she left China, Ms Barshefsky said the support of the two presidents had been crucial. Presidents Bill Clinton and Jian2 Zemin met in Auckland and agreed to put the talks back on track, with a deadline of the next round of WTO talks that will begin in Seattle on November 30. Beijing will eliminate non-tariff quotas within five years, some in two to three years. It will cut tariffs on imported cars from the current 80-100 percent to 25 percent by 2006 and allow foreign financial institutions to finance the purchase of cars. It will allow 49 percent foreign investment in telecommunications firms from the date of entry, rising to 50 per cent in two years, and will allow foreign banks to conduct local currency business with domestic companies two years after accession and with domestic individuals five years after. Beijing also agreed to lift a ban on foreign investment in the Internet. (5) In return, Beijing received a concession on textiles, with Washington backing down from its demand that quotas on China's exports remain until 2010. Instead they will end in 2005, but with an "anti-import surge" mechanism remaining for a further four years, to prevent a flood of experts.
