CUTTING YOUR OWN SWITCH

In by-gone years there was a helpful tool parents sometimes used to impart wisdom to their children called a “hickory switch” (“hickory” for short). This tool often made a lasting impression, and imparted memorable instruction to children whenever it was used. And, years later, it will often bring forth a smile or even laughter to those whose parents loved them enough to provide such “memorable instruction.” One method that would sometimes accompany the use of a hickory switch was to tell a son or daughter who was in need of wisdom to go outside and cut a “hickory” and bring it back. This would generate an analytical process in the mind of the child which was often educational. On one hand the child was tempted to find a limb that was light weight, or small, or weak, or semi rotten, or otherwise would not be able to impart memorable wisdom. But, on the other hand, the child realized that if the switch was not sufficient then the parent would feel that more wisdom was needed. Talk about your conundrums. In latter times this tool for imparting wisdom has, for the most part, fallen out use. God has many tools at His disposal to impart wisdom. Unfortunately man is often slow to comprehend the wisdom that God imparts. One example is found in the book of Esther. Haman was a man of importance to King Ahasuerus. The king placed him above all the other princes in his kingdom (Esther 3:1). But Haman was a prideful man who needed instruction in the wisdom of God. Haman hated Mordecai; but he was not satisfied with punishing him. No! In his anger, Haman devised a diabolical plan. He talked the king into signing a decree that all the Jews were to be executed on a certain day. But God had His own plan ~ a different plan. The king wanted to honor Mordecai, a Jew and the relative of Queen Esther. Haman thought the king wanted to honor him, so, he advised an elaborate honor to be bestowed on the person the king wished to honor. Then king Ahasuerus ordered Haman to go and bestow this honor on Mordecai. Haman had to put a robe and a royal crest on Mordecai and then lead him around the town on horseback proclaiming, “Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor!” Haman, blinded by hurt pride and anger, failed to receive the instruction God had intended to impart. This was a fatal mistake on Haman’s part. Haman had built a gallows fifty cubits high on which he intended Mordecai to be hanged. But God turned Haman’s plans back on himself. It was Haman, not Mordecai, who was hanged on those gallows. (Side note: The gallows had been erected at Haman’s own house ~ Esther 7:9.) Mordecai and the Jewish people were delivered from the destruction Haman had thought to bring upon them. Haman had, without realizing it, cut his own switch. The nations have sunk down in the pit which they made; In the net which they hid, their own foot is caught. The Lord is known by the judgment He executes; The wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Meditation. Selah (Psalm 9:15-16) A friend described a common condition of children today as “ABDE” – “Ain’t Been Disciplined Enough.” This is not limited to our children.
