Lesson Plan Format s10

Lesson Plan Format Date: 4/4/05 Teacher: Brett Ratliff School: Jeter Primary Grade: Pre-K

Focus (Skill Theme): Jumping & Landing (Locomotor) Sub-Focus (Movement Concepts): Effort (Force), Jumping with proper technique using arms and legs in unison and bending knees to get maximum distance. Equipment: (exact amounts)  10 poly spots  2 long jump ropes  7 hula hoops  7 cones

Protocols:  Freeze(Stop)  Go(Start)  Put equipment at feet while in freeze mode  Bring it in(come to me and take a knee leaving equipment where it is)  Clean Up(Put equipment at proper place)

Objective: “At the end of this lesson the students will be able to….” Jump from one or both feet onto two feet with the proper technique. The students will also recognize the best way to jump for distance is to have knees bent and swing arms. The students will also learn balance and controlled jumping throughout the lesson by having to jump onto targets varying in size.

Learning Cues: 1. Squat 2. Lock (arms back) 3. rabbit/fire (swing arms from back to front, jump)

Set Induction: “Has anyone ever seen a frog or a rabbit? How do they move around? They jump to move don’t they!!! Today we are going to learn how to jump in many different ways. So now that you're here, you are no longer children. We are now frogs. So, everyone give me a big "Ribbit." Now get inside your hoop and let’s get started.”

Organizational Formats: I plan on using the hula-hoops as the “home base” for each of the students through the majority of the lesson. It helps keep them separated and helps provide spatial awareness. The children will jump in and out of there hoops like frogs and also jump on poly spots and around cones like they are jumping through the forest. I will also provide two jump ropes stretched in the form of a river so that the children can try to jump over it.

Content Development:  Informing (2-3 Minutes): Your hoop is now your lily pad. Everyone make sure you are on your lily pad. Before we jump, we have to squat down. So, everyone squat with me. Freeze. I'm going to show you how I'll jump. 1,2,3 Ribbit (jump). Now you try with me. Good, but we are "expert frog jumpers," so we have to add something. On your lily pads, swing your arms back and forth like me. Super, now we are going to put it all together. Freeze and watch me! Squat, arms back (1,2,3), Ribbit (arms up, jump). Wonderful! Now let's do it all together. Squat, 123, ribbit! Fabulous!  Extension (1-3 Minutes): See if you can do it 5 times in a row. Ready…Squat, Lock, Ribbit.  Informing (1-2 Minutes): Now we have to move around the forest. So we will need to leave our lily pad. Weave around the trees (cones) to get to your food (poly spots). Let’s see how good you can jump like a frog to the food closest to you. After you eat your food go back to your lily pad. Go.  Refinement(With Extension): I'm looking for arms on the "lock." Let me see arms.  Extension (2-3 Minutes): Now let's jump backwards off the lily pad. Freeze, eyes on me, and squat, lock, ribbit. Let's try together. Now jump back on. Very Good!  Refinement(with extension): Don't forget to squat!  Informing and Extension (2-3 Minutes): Now we will jump side to side. Get back on your lily pad and freeze. We will squat, lock, ribbit this way. Now I will jump back on the lily pad. Let's try together. Great. Now try it on the other side. Super!  Informing and Extension (1-2 Minutes): Everyone take a giant step backwards and let's see if we can jump back in. squat, lock, ribbit. (do this several times)  Application(Culminating Activities)

Culminating Activity: (Application is included in both Culminating activities.)

1. Now we need to roam around the woods looking for the clear creek. We need to weave through the trees and land on the lily pads so we don’t get our feet stuck in the mud. Follow the lily pads and remember to squat, lock and ribbit. Don’t fall off of the lily pads or you’ll have to start all over. Lets see how fast we can get to the creek!!!!

2. You all have been such "expert frog jumpers," that you are ready to go to the creek. I need everyone to quietly pick a spot on the edge of the creek. Reach your frog legs and make sure you are in your personal space.  Let's all go for a swim. On ribbit, we will jump in the creek. 1,2,3, ribbit. We are all wet (shake, shake, splash, splash) Let's get out of this water. On 3 we will jump back out of the creek. 1,2,3, ribbit.  That water was too cold. Let's try not to get back in. Now let's see if we can jump over the creek without getting wet. Squat, 123, ribbit.  If you got wet, I need you to come down here to the narrower part.  If you made it across, I want you to try an even wider part.  Keep going and see how wide of a creek you can jump.  Don't forget to squat.  I need to see arms up on ribbit.  Freeze. Back to your lily pads.

Closure: (Plan some “thinking questions” to check for understanding.)

Is it easier to jump with your legs strait or bent? Do you need to use your arms? By raising your hand, what are some things we need to remember when jumping? Good! Let's do all of them together. Squat, lock (arms back and swinging), ribbit (arms up and jump). Let's do it one last time and end with a big RIBBIT. Squat, lock, RIBBIT!!! You did an excellent job today.
