We Are to Pray for Others

~Caring for Others~ Season 3, episode 18: “Earshot”

In the Buffy episode, Buffy heard all the thoughts of the students around her, how they were often obsessed with their own problems while ignoring the problems of people around them. What problems are you facing now? What do you worry about? What do people around you worry about?

What does Jesus have to say about worry in Matthew 6:25-34? Why is it so hard for us NOT to worry?

Contrast what Jesus says about worrying about our own problems with what he has to say about caring for other people’s problems in Matthew 25:31-46.

Read Phillipians 2:1-8. What was Jesus’ attitude toward others? Read Phillipians 2:19-22. How was Timothy described here?

-What does humility look like? -How can we “look to the interests of others”?

One way is to pray for others: check out 1Timothy 2:1-4 and1 Samuel 12:23.

How can we pray for others? Read these great examples. John 17:20-23 Col. 1:3-14 Phil. 1:3-11

Who in your life needs your care, prayers, and service? What are you going to do about it?

“humility is not thinking meanly of ourselves; it is just not thinking of ourselves at all”

“as we seek to live for Christ, we live for others” JONATHAN (Lurches back from her, aims the gun straight at her) Stop doing that! BUFFY Doing what? J ONATHAN Stop saying my name like we're friends! We're not friends! You all think I'm an idiot! A short idiot! BUFFY (matter-of-factly) I don't. I don't think about you much at all. Nobody here really does. Bugs you, doesn't it. You have all this pain, and all these feelings and nobody's really paying attention. JONATHAN You think I just want attention? BUFFY No. I think you're up in the clock tower with a high-powered rifle because you wanna blend in. Believe it or not, Jonathan, I understand about the pain. JONATHAN Oh right. Cuz the burden of being beautiful and athletic, that's a crippler. BUFFY You know what? I was wrong. You are an idiot. My life happens to, on occasion, suck beyond the telling of it. Sometimes more than I can handle. And it's not just mine. Every single person down there is ignoring your pain because they're too busy with their own. Jonathan lowers the rifle more. Buffy steps toward the window. She looks down at the Quad below. BUFFY The beautiful ones. The popular ones. The guys that pick on you. Everyone. Jonathan slowly moves up behind her to see what she sees. He steps up right next to her. BUFFY If you could hear what they were feeling. The loneliness. The confusion. It looks quiet down there. It's not. It's deafening. She turns to face him.
