The HemiHelp Ball 4th November 2011 The Savoy Hotel

The HemiHelp Ball Committee would like your organisation to play a major part in this event.

The options for your company’s involvement are listed below together with the benefits we can provide for your generous support. In addition to the benefits listed, your company will receive:

 Positive association with HemiHelp, the UK’s only charity that provides support for families affected by hemiplegia  A unique branding opportunity, accessing up to 300 guests in positions of influence in society and business  The chance to make a real difference to the lives of families throughout the UK. The HemiHelp Ball committee is delighted to be able to present you with details of our inaugural fund raising Ball which, we are confident, will become a ‘must attend’ event in all of our calendars.

HemiHelp is the UK’s only charity that provides support for families affected by hemiplegia. It is a membership organisation supporting children and young people with hemiplegia, and their families. HemiHelp receives no government funding and relies entirely on voluntary donations to keep providing its essential core services.

Childhood hemiplegia is the most common form of cerebral palsy and affects one in 1000 children. It is the result of an injury to the brain, frequently a stroke, and it can occur in utero, during birth and at any time in childhood. One side of the body will be affected by paralysis and the child with hemiplegia will often have a noticeable limp and a significantly weaker arm. Diagnosis is not straightforward and more complex health conditions will be diagnosed as the child grows up. These include epilepsy, learning difficulties and psychological issues such as depression and challenging behaviour. There is no cure for this condition and the cause is unknown.

HemiHelp was set up in 1990 by a small group of parents, and now has a thriving membership of families and professionals all over the UK. HemiHelp provides information, support and events for children and adults with hemiplegia, their families and the professionals who support them.

Our target for our first Ball is to raise awareness and funding for HemiHelp and your help and support will be vital in order for us to continue to support all of the people that need us.

In year one, we would love to see a total fund of over £50,000 raised for HemiHelp and we hope to do this by providing you all with a fabulous event in the most wonderful setting.

The dinner will be first class, fun and above all else, raise money to help those that need it most! No better excuse for a night out at the newly refurbished The Savoy, truly the most glamorous venue in London.

£1,000 could help us provide three months of one-to-one support to families through our HelpLine. The HelpLine is staffed by trained volunteers, all of whom are either parents of children with hemiplegia or have hemiplegia themselves. This means that in addition to a wealth of knowledge on a huge range of topics, the HelpLiners also know and understand exactly what callers are going through.

£2,500 could enable HemiHelp to run a conference for parents of children with hemiplegia. HemiHelp conferences provide a chance for parents to hear about the latest developments in research and treatment from experts on hemiplegia. They are also a valuable opportunity to meet other parents and to share experiences, difficulties and concerns about raising a child with hemiplegia.

£5,000 could pay for a ‘Try It!’ Activity Day designed to give children with hemiplegia the opportunity to try new sporting and creative activities in a supportive environment where their needs are understood. These activities can have significant therapeutic benefits, as playing a musical instrument or a sport that they enjoy encourages children to make use of their affected side. Taking part in an Activity Day also boosts the children’s confidence and self esteem, and gives them the opportunity to form lasting friendships with other children with the same condition. Most importantly, they have a lot of fun!

£10,000 could enable us to pilot a service for young adults with hemiplegia to support their transition into employment and independence. Young disabled people are four times as likely as other young people to be unemployed, but we believe that with the right support, young people with hemiplegia can make a positive contribution to working life. Having a job would not just enable them to support themselves, but also to feel that they are a part of mainstream society.

£25,000 would enable us to make sure that all families receive an information pack when their child is first diagnosed with hemiplegia. The packs will complement the information given to parents by consultants, answering questions that the consultant perhaps didn’t have time to go into or that parents in a state of shock did not think to ask. Crucially, the packs will also tell parents where they can go for more information and support at this very difficult time.
