Notes from Discussion Forum Committee Meeting

Notes from Discussion Forum Committee Meeting 2/10/11

Online Discussion – After a general discussion, we agreed that with the overwhelming amount webinars, meetings, listservs, blogs, and resources available, we don’t feel that a discussion forum will draw a crowd. In addition, we feel we don’t have a good forum that would generate a lot of interest. Online discussions seem to work best when the people know each other. If this was for presentations then taking the conversation online would be a great idea.

Perhaps a better way to continue the discussion is to create an asynchronous discussion board immediately after a lively discussion takes place at ALA. Letting the participants in the discussion forum know that the conversation will continue online. We get the emails of the participants so we can follow-up with a link to the discussion board. It is important that the discussion leader agrees and takes the lead in the online discussion.

Call for Proposals – Sarah will make the changes to the call we used for midwinter and send it to the committee.
