1. On several note cards, write questions such as “May I have some cards?” “Can I go outside and play?” “ Are we there yet?” “Can I have a Popsicle?” Read these with the student and ask what their mother would say. Say, “Today, we are going to read about two friends and questions they ask their mothers. Let’s read and see what happens.”

2. Ask the student what they do when they have trouble sleeping. Do they ask one of their parents for help? Say, “Today, Hattie Rabbit has trouble going to sleep because it is still light outside. Let’s read and see what her mother does to help her sleep.”

3. Have some different remedies for getting to sleep such as a picture of sheep (to count), a picture of a glass of warm milk, ect. Explain each one to the student and ask if they ever have trouble sleeping. Say, “Today we are going to read about a little Rabbit who can’t go to sleep.
