SCHOOLS FOR PEACE - SKOLE ZA MIR WHAT IS IT?

SFP/SZM is a new partnership. We expect a growing number of schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and the UK, to become partners over the next four years. The purpose of the partnership is to help each partner school to make ‘peace making’ an important part of its educational and community life.

By ‘peace-making’ we mean helping pupils to understand the causes of conflict and ways of resolving it, and to develop skills in peace-making. The project will cover international and national peace-making, as well as peace-making in school and everyday community life.

At the centre of the SFP/SZM partnership is Coventry Cathedral. This famous Cathedral is very well known for its work in promoting peace-making internationally. The Cathedral is working with SANA as coordinator of the partnership. SANA is a small development agency, which has several years’ experience in promoting cooperation between Bosnian and British people, including schools’ partnerships.

WHAT ARE THE AIMS?

The main aims are: to create, over a period of about four years, a network of schools in all three countries (30 or more schools altogether) committed to promoting peace. to encourage and support, in each of the partner schools, in all three countries, educational and community activities which

enable young people to remember past events in ways which encourage cooperation in the present

demonstrate that our similarities and our differences are both pathways to peaceful partnership

create an awareness of, and commitment to, Europe as our common home irrespective of ethnicity or religion. WHAT DOES BEING A PARTNER SCHOOL INVOLVE?

SFP/SZM welcomes any school which accepts its aims and is willing to help to fulfill them.

Each partner school signs a partnership agreement with Coventry Cathedral. Each partner is therefore, indirectly, a partner with all other partner schools. Each partner school is welcome to share information with, and cooperate with, any other school in the partnership.

Partner schools differ from each other. Some will have more opportunities to undertake projects than others. Some will want to share with more partner schools than others. Coventry Cathedral and SANA will help each

new partner school to choose others to work with. SANA is responsible for keeping all partners informed about partner activities, through the website, and visits to partner schools.

WHAT RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE?

A most important feature of Schools 4 Peace is the educational material which partners are free to use and to share with each other. Lesson plans and supporting resources will be provided by Coventry Cathedral, the partner schools themselves, and other sources. The material is to be suitable for young people in different age groups; and for use either inside or outside the curriculum.

A priority in the first year of SFP/SZM is to create a basic stock of this resource material. The stock can be added to as the partnership grows. WHAT ACTIVITIES CAN PARTNERS DO?

As well as using the lesson material available, each school can choose activities suited to its circumstances or status (eg. urban or village school, state or faith based, primary or secondary) under these headings:

discovering and sharing real-life stories – examples of forgiveness and reconciliation

visits to places important in the story of WW1, and retelling their story

historical discovery (but not directly war-related) eg. life in our town 100 years ago

news bulletins about life today in our country/town/village today (including pictures and interviews)

music - creating and sharing songs with a peace theme

drama – writing and performing plays, with a ‘peace’ theme.
