HARRISBURG DIOCESAN CATHOLIC CHARISMATIC RENEWAL A LIGHT TO THE NATIONS SUMMER 2015 The Charismatic Gift of Teaching by Fr. Frank Karwacki, Harrisburg Diocesan Liaison for Charismatic Renewal

The Gospel of Mark 6:34 (NAB Translation) states, “When He (Jesus) disembarked and saw the vast crowd, He was moved with pity for them and He began to teach them many things”. The crowds were following Him and they were hungry but before He fed them by the multiplication of the loaves and the fish, “He began to teach them many things”. Although they had a physical hunger Jesus knew their deeper spiritual hunger for the truth and so He made teaching them a priority. They were in dire need of His teaching.

1 Cor. 12:8 (NAB) states “To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; to another the expression of knowledge according to the same Spirit”. We see in this that teaching, the imparting of wisdom and knowledge, is a vital charismatic gift for the building up of the community! The Catechism of the Catholic Church 428 states, “Whoever is called to teach Christ must seek first the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus”. The Holy Father and our bishops are the primary teachers of the faith but we are all called to be open to the charismatic gift of teaching. A charismatic prayer group without teaching is like a garden without water!

Those who feel called to teach must discern their call and step out in faith and have their gift tested. They must be allowed time by the group for their gift to grow. They must be faithful and obedient to the teachings of the Catholic Church and teach “with the Church”. They must be constant and eager learners by immersing themselves in the Sacred Scriptures, The Catechism of the Catholic Church, the lives of the saints, charismatic literature and other spiritual reading; but most of all their study must be in the context of humble prayer in the Spirit. Pray that the Lord Jesus will raise up teachers in your prayer group and pray for those who have the gift of teaching!

“For as in one body we have many parts, and all the parts do not have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ and individually parts of one another. Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us exercise them: if prophecy, in proportion to the faith; if ministry, in ministering; if one is a teacher, in teaching … Let love be sincere; hate what is evil, hold on to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; anticipate one another in showing honor. Do not grow slack in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, persevere in prayer.” (Rom 12: 4-7;9-12)

“Whether extraordinary or simple and humble, charisms are graces of the Holy Spirit which directly or indirectly benefit the Church, ordered as they are to her building up, to the good of men and to the needs of the world. … Charisms are to be accepted with gratitude by the person who receives them, and by all members of the Church as well. They are a wonderfully rich grace for the apostolic vitality and for the holiness of the entire Body of Christ, provided they really are genuine gifts of the Holy Spirit and are used in full conformity with authentic promptings of this same Spirit, that is, in keeping with charity, the true measure of all charisms.” (CCC 799 & 800)

“DANVILLE RETREAT” The Danville Retreat Center is a quiet place for individuals or groups, within a serene setting of natural beauty away from daily distractions. This year’s theme, “The Mercy of the Holy Spirit”, will help prepare us to be spiritually awake and prepared to receive the benefits available to us from Pope Francis’ Jubilee Year of Mercy (December 8, 2015: the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception through November 20, 2016: the Solemnity of Christ the King). Information and registration for this retreat and other diocesan and Charismatic events can be found at: www.aliveinthespirit.net

I have been asked to tell the Renewal what the Pope expects from you. The first thing is conversion to the love of Jesus, which changes life and makes of the Christian a witness of the Love of God. The Church expects this witness of Christian life and the Holy Spirit helps us to live the coherence of the Gospel for our holiness. I expect from you that you share with all, in the Church, the grace of Baptism in the Holy Spirit (expression that is read in the Acts of the Apostles). I expect from you an evangelization with the Word of God which proclaims that Jesus is alive and loves all men. I expect that you give witness of spiritual ecumenism with all those brothers and sisters of other Churches and Christian communities who believe in Jesus as Lord and Savior. That you remain united in the love that the Lord Jesus asks of us for all men, and in the prayer to the Holy Spirit to come to this unity, necessary for evangelization in the name of Jesus. Remember that “the Charismatic Renewal is by its very nature ecumenical … Catholic Renewal rejoices over what the Holy Spirit carries out in the other Churches” (1 Malines 5, 3). Be close to the poor, the needy, to touch in their flesh the flesh of Jesus. Be close, please! Seek unity in the Renewal, because unity comes from the Holy Spirit and is born of the unity of the Trinity. From whom does division come? From the devil! Division comes from the devil. Flee from internal fights, please! They must not exist among us! Brothers and sisters, remember: adore the Lord God: this is the foundation! To adore God. Seek sanctity in the new life of the Holy Spirit. Be dispensers of the grace of God. Avoid the danger of excessive organization. Go out into the streets to evangelize, proclaiming the Gospel. Remember that the Church was born “in going forth” that Pentecost morning. Be close to the poor and touch in their flesh the wounded flesh of Jesus. Let yourselves be led by the Holy Spirit, with that freedom and, please, do not cage the Holy Spirit! With liberty! Seek the unity of the Renewal, unity that comes from the Trinity! And I await you all, Charismatics of the world, to celebrate, together with the Pope, your Great Jubilee in Pentecost of 2017, in Saint Peter’s Square! Thank you! “Lord, take care of your people in expectation of the Holy Spirit. Take care of young people, take care of families, take care of children, take care of the sick, take care of priests, consecrated men and women, take care of us Bishops, take care of all. And grant us that holy intoxication, that of the Spirit, that which makes us speak all languages, the languages of charity, always close to brothers and sisters who need us… teach us to have an open heart to receive the Spirit. Send your Spirit, O Lord, upon us! Amen.” Pope Francis, June 3, 2014
