Supervisors of Low Incidence Populations (SLIP)

MAASE Supervisors of Low Incidence Populations (SLIP) Meeting Notes June 11, 2013

1. Presentation by Deaf Blind Central Director, Beth Kennedy - Michigan’s Training and Resource Project:

 Provided an overview of interveners and intervention including a job description, hierarchy for determining which students need the support of an intervener, the new national credential for interveners, events in Michigan and other states, and on the national level (including IDEA). An “Administrator Packet” (including handouts, booklets, and a DVD) developed by Utah State University was provided, free of charge, for all in attendance

 Beth would like support from MAASE and would be willing to come to a Spotlight to present

 Information can also be found at intervener.org (Utah State)

 An intervener is like a paraprofessional who works one-on-one with a student who is deaf/blind (and sometimes other impairments)

 Per every 1000 students, 1 or 2 are identified as deaf/blind

 Using interveners is a “Cadillac of Services”, but is best practice

 DBC offers training – (2) Four hour classes and 80 hours of practicum will get a credential (on-line, Utah State)

 When IDEA is redefined, intervener could or might be in the language

2. Amy Shelling, GVSU, asked if SLIP members would be sure to fill out an on-line questionnaire regarding PBIS at center-based programs. Tina Lawson has sent this out to SLIP members. It only takes a few minutes to fill out and there are several items that only require checking a box.

3. Brian reminded everyone to apply 1% exemptions. 4. MAASE Summer Institute – Any suggestions for session topics can be sent to Tina Lawson.

5. SLIP members were reminded of the curriculum/literacy workgroup meeting to be held on Wednesday, June 12th at 12:30 in the Duisenberg Room.

In attendance: Brian Pianosi, Sally Brueck, Amy Schelling, Beth Kennedy, Nancy Miller, Jeff Reinelt, Brooke McIsreal, Pete Bennett
