Course Description: This course is designed for students wishing to pursue a career in the Healthcare Industry. The course will enable students to receive initial exposure to Healthcare Science skills and attitudes applicable to the healthcare industry. The concepts of health, wellness and preventative care are evaluated, as well as, ethical and legal issues facing healthcare providers. Basic healthcare skills are introduced, including medical terminology, microbiology and basic life support.

Required Text / Supplies: Introduction to Health Science, Dorothy Winger and Susan Blahnik 3 Ring Binder 1-1.5” Notebook Paper for notes

Goals / Objectives: 1. Develop the basic skills and knowledge necessary to apply the principles and competencies performed in the healthcare industry. 2. Develop the ability to perform skills that are associated with the required competencies of the healthcare industry. 3. Develop attitudes consistent with those expected of an individual working in the healthcare industry and society in general.

Information Technology Method of Evaluation: Your FINAL GRADE will be calculated the following way:  Semester 1: 40%  Semester 2: 40%  Midterm/Final: 20%

Your SEMESTER GRADE will be calculated the following way:  Tests/Projects: 50%  Daily Assignments and Labs: 25%  Quizzes: 25%

Attendance Policy: You are expected to be in class, on time, every day. If you are going to be late, go get a tardy pass from the attendance office. If you are returning from being absent, get an absence notice slip from the attendance office.

Late and Make-up Work: Because of the nature of the healthcare industry, late work will not be accepted. Any assignment that is not turned in at the assigned time will be given a grade of zero.

In case of an absence, make-up work, quizzes, and tests must be completed per Cartersville High School guidelines. You are responsible for obtaining class notes and assignments. In case of unexcused absence, a student will not be allowed to make up any graded work.

Discipline: 1st Offense – Verbal reprimand, seating change 2nd Offense – Phone Call to parent/guardian 3rd Offense – Written disciplinary action

Safety: This course will involve frequent hands on activities. Appropriate safety procedures and techniques will be discussed prior to each activity. Deviance from these procedures at any time will result in automatic exclusion from that practical session, and a written project will be assigned. Repeat violations will be managed on an individual basis and may include dismissal from the program.

Study Hall: There is no scheduled study hall specific for healthcare science. Students will be allowed to set up individual times to meet with me for additional instruction.
