RAFS-AA EXPEDITION BRIEF

1. Please find enclosed a variety of information on Ascension Island. Some of the more important information info is duplicated to ensure that you don’t miss anything! It is key to understand that Ascension Island is not like other military exped centres. There are no full time staff running the centre and as such maintenance of the equipment and the centre is undertaken by members of the RAF Sub-Aqua Association (RAFS-AA) going down at the beginning and end of the season. Despite this, the harsh environment and the high-level of use can take their toll on the equipment throughout the 9-month season. Therefore, it is important that you look after the kit, conduct minor repairs if required, and report any equipment issues as soon as possible to the RAF-AA Equipment Officer.

2. Before planning your expedition, you must read the Risk Assessment and Emergency Action Plan for sub-aqua diving on Ascension Island, available from the RAFSAA website.

3, Once allocated your slot please acknowledge your acceptance providing your contact details to the Expeditions Officer and Equipment Officer so they can contact you in the event of any changes.

4. Flights are booked via your Admin order through the Ascension Island Movements team. You must send a copy of your Admin order (e-copy preferred) with completed nominal roll to Ascension Island WO Movs and the Expeditions Officer at least 8 weeks before your expedition departs UK. As the Flights are CNFP you will not receive confirmation until the Thursday/Friday before you depart. There is no requirement to fill in CNFP request forms. The Booking cell number on Ascension Island is 923198537-3375. All personnel in Ascension are on the military e- mail system and can be found by post or name.

5. Every expedition going to Ascension is required to pay a deposit of £500. The deposit must be sent to the RAFS-AA Treasurer along with your equipment hire charge of £1000 and vehicle hire charge of £720 at least 8 weeks prior to departure. The total amount payable can be combined into one cheque. The deposit will be refunded after confirmation that no equipment or vehicles have been damaged due to negligence. If negligent damage has occurred, repair costs will be deducted from the deposit. You must also get a pre-exped equipment brief from the RAFSAA Equipment Officer (WO Andy Dickens 95851 6979) during which any necessary equipment maintenance will be briefed.

6. Expeditions to Ascension Island attract a charge for CNFP passengers iaw JSP800 Vol2 Ed5 Pt2 Ch2. The charge is associated with fuel and tax costs as a charter is used for the air bridge with BFSAI. The costs can be found from Brize Norton Pax Plans who will also advise how the charges are to be paid. As at time of publishing, the cost is £140 to Ascension and £60 return to Brize per head; they must be paid at each departure point. Cheques can be made payable in advance to the following accounts:

7. On Ascension, you will be accommodated and fed at Travellers Hill but will use the English Bay Expedition Centre as your operating base. You will require vehicles; RAFSAA provide 2 vehicles one twin-Cab Landrover and a 7-seat Defender charged at £30 per day; fuel must be purchased locally. Boat fuel is to be purchased at the local garage as well so budget for approx £1000 for all fuel. Utilities of water and electricity are based on meter reading, they will be read at the beginning and end of your expedition, again budget around £400. This must be paid before leaving the Island. Cheques or cash are acceptable, cheques should be made payable to “SFAS RAF Ascension” and must be paid to the Cashier at the airhead.

BRIEF FOR DIVING EXPEDITIONS VISITING ASCENSION

INTRODUCTION

1. Ascension Island is a Volcanic Island situated in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean just south of the Equator. With its History, location and tropical waters it provides some of the best diving available anywhere in the world proving the opportunity to dive wrecks and reefs as well as the opportunity to dive with some of the best marine life there is. Both the remote nature of the Island and the rugged coastline make this a destination that truly defines what adventurous training is all about. This brief will provide everything to allow exped leaders to plan and successfully lead an expedition to the Island. Starting initially with essential points the rest of the brief will set out all the rest of the information.

KEY POINTS

2. The following are key points that all exped leaders are to ensure that their exped personnel are aware of:

a. Ascension Island is a remote and high risk environment for diving, it is some distance from any recompression facility and is renowned for unpredictable tides, currents and freak waves. Before diving ensure that all have been briefed on “boat procedures”: launching, loading, mooring, safe motoring areas, as guano jetty is occasionally considered unacceptable to use. There have been incidents in the past where divers have been injured or boast badly damaged. There is a video available through the RAFSAA website showing the correct procedures when using the boats; it will not play on Dii. This video is also available in the arrival pack on island.

b. Comms with DDMO via satphone is to be confirmed on arrival on island.

c. Exped ESADS is to make contact with Fire Chief, Mr Billy Minto on arrival.

d. Expeds are to carry out gas purity check on the Nitrox systems before diving commences. This is to be faxed to the Equipment Officer prior to diving.

e. Expeds are to book out/in with Ascension Ops room for each dive evolution.

A-1 f. Use callsign ‘Ascension Radio’ for emergency VHF comms on ch16.

g. Contact DDMO first for all Diving related incidents via Satphone.

h. NO COMMS – NO DIVING AT THAT LOCATION.

i. The sea is unpredictable – swell warning in excess of 2.5m = No diving .

j. Nitrox is to be used. Do not try to get a different mix from the compressor it is covered for a reason.

k. There is no recompression facility on the island therefore:

i) Diving is limited to 30m and planned decompression diving is not to be undertaken.

ii) A safety stop of 3min @ 6m is to be done at the end of every dive.

iii) No diver is to come within 5 mins of requiring a deco stop during any dive regardless of diving gas.

iv) Diving is to cease for at least 24hrs after every 4 days of diving.

3. This brief for Ascension Island is the latest version and was correct at the time of printing. You will be informed of any major changes prior to your departure dates. Ensure that you keep OC Movs at Ascension up to date with your planning sending a copy of your Admin order when ready. Any changes in flight dates should be discussed with him in the first instant and info’d to the RAFS- AA Expedition Officer.

4. Please note that the equipment at Ascension Island has been provided by RAFS-AA for a number of visiting sub-aqua expeditions in the next 12 months and without your care and attention will become unserviceable very quickly. The RAFS-AA equipment hire charges reflect spares, servicing, testing and eventual replacement – the equipment is acquired, serviced and maintained through non-public funds. Ensure that you have a nominated equipment officer on your expedition to look after the kit. All expeditions are required to carry out any minor servicing and repairs as they occur (you may seek advice from the GSE Supervisor if required on Ext 3341 however under the support contract he is not obliged to help except “In the event of a boat or engine failure assist in the repair of the expedition centre fleet of boats and their engines (April-Nov only)” You must also carry out an inventory check on arrival before you commence diving, and again before you leave the Island prior to your return to the UK. You are to contact the RAFS-AA Equipment Officer at least 14 days prior to departure to be given an up to date verbal brief. Failure to do this may result in cancellation of your flight.

ACCOMODATION AND RATIONING

5. Accommodation. Annex B provides maps and locations of facilities on Island. All members of the expedition will be accommodated at Traveller’s Hill but will operate out of the Expedition Centre at English Bay. Travellers Hill accommodation is 4-man room transit accommodation style. The expedition centre provides an equipment storage building, compressors and a patio with a BBQ pit. The storage building is a large unfurnished room, with the exception of a few chairs, with no air conditioning and is ideal for wet equipment storage. Diving expeditions are the only users of this room and it is kept locked between expeditions. The compressors are in a covered area behind this building and full operating instructions are provided. The rooms at the end of the building are out of bounds to visitors. A hosepipe and fresh water tanks are available outside the building for washing of dive kit. However you will be charged for any water you use.

A-2 6. Rationing. All meals are taken at Travellers Hill camp in the combined Mess. Packed lunches are provided every day.

7. Facilities. The usual Stn facilities are available at Ascension Island, for example a Combined mess, NAAFI - (all ranks bar), including a small shop. Wifi access can be purchased in the shop and is available in the bar area and also around some of the accommodation. There is a mobile phone signal, Vodafone and O2 only, signal available; however, it is very expensive and the best option is to use ‘Skype or Facetime’ or buy a phone Card. The Volcano Club situated at the USAF compound is open to all comers and accepts both Sterling and US dollars. The package store (B-EX) next to the Volcano club is out of bounds to all visitors.

TRANSPORT AND POL

8. Transport. RAFSAA provide 2 Landrovers, 1 x twin-cab and 1 x Defender @ £25 per vehicle per day. This is already booked for you on confirmation of exped slot allocation; please complete agreement form at Annex C and return to the RAFSAA Exped Officer.

9. You will be met at the Airhead by the AIB ATI and handed over the exped file along with exped centre and accommodation keys. The RAFSAA Landrovers are collected from MT just across the road from the terminal. You will need a UK driving licence to drive on Ascension Island. A full HO/TO procedure will be gone through for the vehicles; the HO/TO at the end of the exped will take place at 1100 after which the vehicle may be retained but must be returned in the same full, clean and tidy state they were for the HOTO. Failure to do so will result in the Deposit being withheld.

10. POL. All fuel is to be sourced from the local garage and will require a cash payment. The civilian garage, is located en-route to the exped centre, and its opening hours are displayed. A POL store has been built in front of the Expedition Centre; expedition fuel and oil must be kept in this store. All petrol and 2-stroke cans must be left full prior to your departure.

DIVING

11. The water temperature is approximately 23 to 28ºC and the visibility is 10-40 metres. A Wetsuit is all that should be required and the hardy ones amongst you may find just a 'T' shirt to be sufficient. However, you are advised to take knee protection of some sort and suitable gloves; hard sole boots are essential. Many divers find overalls provide adequate protection both underwater and from the sun in the boat.

12. All diving is limited to 30 metres on Ascension Island and decompression stops are not permitted (the nearest pot is days away!) The Risk Assessment also mandates a minimum 3 min stop at 6m at the end of every dive, that no diver is to come within 5mins of the need for a deco stop during any dive regardless of diving gas, and a 24-hr break in diving after every 4 days of diving. All shore diving must be covered by a boat and SMBs should be used, (this is at the discretion of the expedition DO/SADS iaw BRD 2806(5)). Delayed SMB’s are very useful on Ascension Island. A met report and swell warning are to be obtained daily from the met office or Ops.

13. Take all personal spares for your equipment, for example the odd spare strap, O rings and hoses, as there are no dive shops on the Island.

14. The main things to watch out for are stonefish and moray eels. For some reason Ascension has got the whole world's supply of morays. The golden rule is "if there's a hole, there's a moray". Sharks, Dolphins, whales and Mata Rays have been seen around Ascension Island.

15. Every month is hot so make sure you take some protection to

A-3 wear in the boat and a hat is strongly advised. Also take water or soft drinks in the boat. Sun block is a must for all ‘Individuals who believe they never burn will discover otherwise in Ascension’.

16. Expeditions are often approached by people working on Ascension Island, looking for chances to dive with the expedition. This must be reflected in the initial JSATFA. As a goodwill gesture, expedition leaders may wish to approach OC Movs while writing their JSATFA to ascertain who will wish to take advantage of diving with the expedition.

17. A list of dive sites are available at the exped centre. A great book is available through Amazon providing details of most sites.

EQUIPMENT

18. A full list of Equipment is available at Annex D. Upon arrival the AIB ATI will help you carry out a thorough check of all the equipment. A Start of exped fax at Annex H is to be sent to the Equipment Officer to ensure any defects or missing items are reported and not billed to you

19. The RHIBS are not to be brought into Guano Jetty or Georgetown harbour or alongside or beached anywhere except in the case of an emergency. The ‘floppy’ is only for use within English Bay, namely no further left than One Hook, no further right than Eddies Gullies and no further out than Tanker Bouy.

20. Before using the compressor, an air purity test is to be completed on the compressors, using the FactAir F2235 air purity tester. You should keep the certificate (Annex E) of this test for your records and return a copy to the RAFSAA Equipt Offr to secure your refund of deposit. Operating instructions for the Nitrox compressor are at Annex’s F & G. Hard copies are provided to the island at the beginning of the season; however, these do go missing throughout the year and as such it is recommended that you take a copy with you in case.

21. Emergency Comms Equipment. BRD 2806(5) mandates the use of a SatPhone in order that expeds can communicate direct with DDMO and Ascension Island staff, should there be an incident. During periods of outage of SatPhone connectivity, to allow diving activity to continue expeds are to ensure they have clear comms with Ascension Island staff, via some means (eg VHF), at all times while diving operations are underway and while transiting to and from dive sites. The Exped Ldr is to make contact with the Island Fire Chief, Mt Billy Minto on arrival. Comms are to be confirmed as working from the dive site before diving commences. The booking out/in procedure is to be followed with accurate timings for return. If returning to the exped centre between dives, the exped is to book in and then out before departing on the next dive. At all times both RHIBs are to be used and they are to remain in close proximity to each other in case of incident. The following comms equipment is to be taken out with the exped:

a. An Iridium satellite phone to ensure comms are available at all times when on the water.

b. A handheld VHF radio as the emergency services may not have the satphone number.

c. A GPS so that you can tell the emergency services your location.

22. First Aid Equipment. A peli-case is held at the expedition centre. O2 cylinders are to be signed out from the medical centre on arrival. The peli-case is designed to carry both O2 cylinders. Additional cases are available at the exped centre if the diving officer wishes to have an O2 kit per boat. First Aid kits are not provided by RAFS-AA or the AIB Medical Centre, the exped are to ensure sufficient First Aid Kits are taken. All 1st Aid equipment including the O2 equipment should be opened at the end of each day to ensure any moisture is allowed to dry. In addition, and for those expeds that are trained, an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is also available; proof of qualification is required. Serious injuries can be treated at the Medical Centre at the Airhead or

A-4 at the Hospital in Georgetown.

23. End of Exped. On completion of your expedition you are to ensure that:

a. Compressors. Any required Filter changes have been completed and oil levels are correct. All compressor surfaces have been wiped down and charging hoses stored correctly.

b. Cylinders. Are full.

c. Ferryboat. Has been cleaned, correctly moored and secured, repaired if necessary and engine head sprayed with PX24. If a dive exped is planned to replace you the fuel can, can be left aboard.

d. RHIBS. Correctly moored and secured, repaired if necessary, self drains up, engine heads sprayed with PX24.

e. O2 Kit. Dried and returned to Med Centre.

f. Misc Equip. All cleaned, dried, any shortfalls noted.

g. Moorings. Are checked before diving commences and then regularly during your stay and before you leave the island at the end of your exped.

h. Fuel. All jerry cans full of neat fuel and all boats cans/bladders full with mixed fuel.

i. Tool Box. All tools are cleaned and dried and left laid out in the tool box.

j. Ropes and Anchors. All washed and laid out in equipment room to dry.

24. Handover and Debrief. You are to ensure that a formal muster of the kit is done before departing on the last day with the AIB ATI. Due to the length of time between expeds it is worth writing a HO note to the next exped on one of the white boards. You will probably find one already left from previous expeds and can just amend accordingly. Speak to the Cashier to arrange a payment time; he will ensure the meters are read to confirm the final utilities costs. Any issues raised should also be communicated to the RAFS-AA Expeditions Officer.

25. Equipment Report. If any defects occur with any of the equipment that cannot be repaired in Ascension, you may be asked to pack the item and return it to the RAFS-AA Equipment Officer; a phone call in advance can start the ball rolling for a new/replacement item to be dispatched. You are to Fax the End of Exped Equipment form (Annex I) to the RAFS-AA Equipment Officer before you leave the Island.

26. Please remember that this equipment has been acquired for the Expedition Centre for all visiting expeditions. Approximately, 18 expeditions of 10-12 days duration are expected to visit Ascension Island in the next 12 months so extra care and attention is required for all the kit and Expedition Centre facilities. Please also remember that you are on duty at Ascension Island and exemplary conduct is mandatory at all times if we are to maintain our close ties with the locals.

USER AGREEMENT- RAF SUB-AQUA ASSOCIATION LAND ROVERS

1. Introduction. The RAF Sub-Aqua Association (RAFS-AA) Land Rovers are non-publicly funded vehicles (i.e. not owned by the MOD therefore are not MT Vehicles) and are the property of the RAFS-AA. They are provided for the use of Adventurous Training Expeditions on Ascension Island and as the user you are required to adhere to all the Terms and Conditions detailed below.

2. RAFS-AA Vehicle Manager. A signed copy (electronic over DII is acceptable) of this document is to be forwarded to the RAFS-AA Vehicle Manager prior to expedition deployment and a copy retained as evidence for presentation to the MT Controller at AIB at vehicle collection. The RAFS-AA Vehicle Manager can be reached at [email protected].

3. Hire Period & Payment. The user shall pay the full hire amount to the RAFS-AA Treasurer prior to the collection of the vehicles. The current hire fee is £30 per day per vehicle (or part thereof). This payment ensures fleet management, maintenance and allows for STANDARD degradation and depreciation in conjunction with preventative and corrective maintenance of the vehicles (i.e. fair wear and tear). The £500 Equipment Hire Deposit also covers the Land Rovers.

4. Drivers. All drivers must be aged 25 or over, hold a full and current DVLA Licence with a min Category B entitlement and have received some documented form of formal training on Land Rover variants of vehicles. Individuals with more than 6 penalty points on their DVLA Driving Licence are forbidden to drive the RAFS-AA Land Rovers. To comply with the insurance requirements, Exped Leaders are to annotate the names of those personnel who will be driving the RAFS-AA Land Rovers on their Admin Order and a copy forwarded RAFS-AA Vehicle Manager (email address at Para 2).

5. Fuel. Fuel is not available via Service means from the MT Fuel Installation but is available for purchase from exped funds from Solomon’s Garage on One Boat. Exped Leaders are to ensure they budget for fuel for vehicles.

6. Legal Liability. The hirer/driver is responsible for all offences and subsequent penalties for the duration of the hire of the RAFS-AA Land Rovers. The hirer/driver is to ensure that all legal requirements in force at the time of use are always strictly complied with.

7. Vehicle Utilisation. The vehicles are only to be utilised to assist the expedition to meet its aims as declared on the JSATF(A) and Admin Order. They must not be used for any other business and especially anything which is considered as Hire and Reward.

8. Breakdown and Defects. All defects must be reported to the MT Manager at Ascension Island Base (AIB) at the earliest opportunity, who will progress repairs through IDL and inform the RAFS-AA Vehicle Manager. In the event of a breakdown, make the vehicle safe and call the MT Manager/Controller at AIB on Tel No 3336 to arrange recovery.

9. Damage. All damage (irrespective of how minor) is to be reported to the MT Manager AIB at the earliest opportunity. Any damage will then be assessed and an estimate provided to the RAFS-AA Vehicle Manager who will determine the level and cost of the work required. The insurance excess is £500 therefore the deposit will be utilised to repair minor damage and an insurance claim will only be activated if the estimate to repair exceeds the amount of the deposit. If other RAFS-AA equipment is damaged and funds from the Deposit are utilised to affect these repairs / replacement(s), then the Exped Leader will be liable to make up the difference in funds up to the £500 excess.

C-1 10. Accident/Incident with a Third Party. It is vital that all accidents are reported to the MT Manager AIB as soon as reasonably practicable after the event. Definitions as follows:

a. Accident. A crash or collision involving a RAFS-AA Landrover which, as a result, is classified as being either an RTA or incident and applies whether or not the RTA or Incident occurs on MOD property, on or off duty and whether or not the journey was authorised.

b. RTA. A RTA has occurred when:

(1) A RAFS-AA Land Rover, whether moving or stationary, is involved in a crash or collision with another object thus causing injury to any person, animal, or damage to any vehicle, property, goods or any other object belonging to a third party.

(2) A RAFS-AA Land Rover, by its presence has contributed towards the cause of a RTA in which such injury or damage occurred, i.e. pulling out of a side road causing one vehicle to swerve and collide with another vehicle, but without actual physical involvement.

11. It is important that the procedures as detailed on the RAFS-AA Vehicle – Accident Reporting Procedure Guide Form are strictly adhered to, especially the completion of the RAFS-AA Vehicle - Accident Report Form At Scene Details Document. Both of these documents are to be carried on the vehicle at all times and should be contained in the Vehicle Document Pack Up.

12. Vehicle Handover/Takeover and Cleanliness. The RAFS-AA Land Rovers are each to be returned with a full tank of fuel & the exterior & interior of the vehicle are to be in a clean and tidy condition. The RAFS-AA Vehicle Inspection Sheet is to be completed upon initial takeover and again when handed to the MT Controller at AIB.

13. End of Exped Reporting. Once the Land Rovers have been accepted back into MT AIB, the Exped Leader must forward the HO/TO documents to the RAFS-AA Vehicle Manager. This is to ensure that, where no damage is reported, the exped’s equipment deposit is not delayed in being refunded. Send the completed documents either by Fax or scan and email to either of the following:

Membrane Unit

F-3 Section 2: Warnings and Cautions

2.1 The Renner screw compressor is driven by a belt and is cooled by a fan and radiator.

2.2 The Verticus 5 HP compressor contains moving parts

2.3 There is a danger of injury whilst working on a running compressor.

2.4 You should only run the compressor, with all the protective doors of the compressor closed.

2.5 Before cleaning or repairing the compressor, isolate the compressor electrically and pneumatically and ensure it cannot be restarted by a third person.

2.6 You should only run the compressor, with all the protective doors of the compressor closed.

2.7 During operation the pipe work and casing will become extremely hot, do not touch exposed metal parts whilst in operation or until unit has cooled following use.

2.8 To prevent the build up of CO2 it is necessary to operate the scavenge valve for 3-4 minutes with the compressor running prior to commencement of charging.

2.9 Wear ear protection whilst operating the compressors

2.10 Compressed gas is dangerous ensure that the system is only used by competent persons who have been trained in its use.

F-4 Section 3: Pre Use Checks

0 Renner LP Compressor

3.1 - Switch off the compressor and protect against restarting 3.2 - Wait a minimum of 3 minutes for venting if the compressor has been running 3.3 - Remove LH side panel using key provided. 3.4 - Unscrew the RED oil filler screw cap by hand use a glove if the compressor is hot 3.5 - Observe oil level, level is to be just below the bottom thread of the filler hole, see fig 1.

3.6 - If necessary, top up with SHELL CORENA D 68 to the maximum oil level see Fig. 1 3.7 - Refit the RED oil filler screw cap by hand 3.8 - Refit the LH side panel using key provided.

 In case of emergency or for normal shut down, push the red stop-button  In case of servicing or repair, also isolate the compressor from the electrical supply.

F-5 Pre Use Checks continued:  Verticus 5 HP compressor 3.9 - Locate the oil level sight glass on the RH side of the compressor (as you look at it) 3.10 - Check that the oil level is between the Min and Max marks See Fig.2

3.11 - If necessary top up with BAUER COMPRESSOR OIL N28355 3.12 - To top up unscrew by hand the red cap and pour oil into fill point 3.13 - Once the desired level is reached refit the red cap by screwing it up by hand.

 In case of emergency push the red emergency stop button located on the front panel  In case of servicing or repair, also isolate the compressor from the electrical supply.

F-6 Section 4: Operation.

1 Renner LP Compressor

4.1 - Turn on the Vandagraph O2 analyser on the Membrane unit and ensure it is calibrated to 20.8, if 20.8% is unachievable it may be necessary to remove the O2 cell and calibrate in fresh air. 4.2 - Unlock and remove padlocks from all 3 isolation switches located behind the compressor and turn on all three switches. 4.3 - Turn the Renner LP compressor master switch to ON (on the RH Side of the unit) 4.4 - Open the SHUT OFF valve on the LH side of the unit, ON is with lever in line with the Black / orange pipe ON

4.5 - Failure to carry out the above actions in sequence will damage the unit

4.6 - Switch on the pre heating panel switch

4.7 - Pre heating Amber light will illuminate, the unit then pre heats cycle (3-7 mins approx)

4.8 - Once operating temperature is reached the Green operation light will illuminate

F-7 4.9 - Push the start button located on the front RH corner of the unit.

 If the pressure is higher than indicated on the red mark on the gauge!! STOP the compressor with the red stop button.

 If the oil and operating temperature is higher than 110 °C, the compressor should stop automatically. If the compressor does not stop automatically, switch it off by pressing the red stop button.

F-8 Operation Continued:

 Oxygen Membrane and refrigeration unit.

4.10 - Open the scavenge valve on the HP unit to enable air to flow across the membrane and to the HP unit this purges any CO2 from the compressor / filter stack.

4.11 Ensure the inlet pressure is reading 7 bar +- 1 bar

F-9 Operation Continued:

o Top gauge in Fig.3 is the outlet pressure gauge which should read ~ 0 Bar (with HP compressor running)

o Bottom gauge in Fig.3 is the inlet pressure gauge and should read ~ 7 Bar (with HP compressor running)

o Bottom left blue knob is the pressure reducing valve, there should be no requirement to operate this valve

o Bottom right knob is the O2 percentage adjustment there should be no requirement to operate this valve

o Bauer O2 analyser shown in Fig.3 RAFSAA compressor has yellow Vandagraph analyser fitted.

4.12 - Switch ON the green switch on the front of the refrigeration unit.

4.13 - The red LED display will shown the intermediate temperature of the unit.

F-10 Operation Continued: 4.14 - Allow the refrigeration unit to run until the LED display reads <25 Degrees C 4.15 - Switch ON the Vandagraph O2 analyser, this will display the current O2 %. once the HP compressor is started this will have the effect of drawing air through the Membrane and the O2 percentage should stabilise. If for any reason the O2 percentage is not within the 32-38% range you are to contact the RAFSAA Equipment officer.  HP Compressor Verticus 5

4.16 - Turn the rotary isolator switch on the front panel to the ON position 4.17 - The front LED panel display will illuminate after a 10 second delay 4.18 - The display will show the following information (Fig. 5) 4.19 - Connect 4 x Charging whips to Cylinder valves, ensure cylinder valves remain closed. 4.20 - Ensure the 4 x Charging levers are in the UP (closed) position 4.21 - Start the compressor by pressing button (I) Green LED will illuminate 4.22 - Allow the HP compressor to run for 2-3 minutes with the scavenge valve still open 4.23 - Now close the scavenge valve and observe the pressure rise (Fig.6)

F-11 4.24 - Note you will only see a pressure reading next to the Number 1. 4.25 - Open the 4 x Charging levers by pulling them down 4.26 - Open the 4 x Cylinder valves slowly in case there is a pressure imbalance 4.27 - During charging, continue to monitor the O2% which may fluctuate slightly but should maintain ~36%. 4.28 - If the cylinders valves are not closed at the desired pressure, the compressor will automatically shut down once it achieves its final working pressure. 4.29 - Close the 4 x Cylinder Valves. 4.30 - Close the 4 x Charging Valve levers by lifting them up Note: levers auto purge the line. 4.31 - Disconnect the 4 x charging whips. 4.32 - If necessary change cylinders over and connect 4 x charging whips. And continue from 4.26 4.33 - Once charging is complete and the compressor has shut down as it has achieved its final working pressure. 4.34 - Close the 4 x Cylinder Valves 4.35 - Close the 4 x Charging Valve levers by lifting them up Note: levers auto purge the line. 4.36 - Disconnect the 4 x charging whips.

F-12 Section 5: Shutdown procedure

 HP Compressor Verticus 5

5.1 - Stow the 4 x Charging whips on the stowage points provided. 5.2 - Turn the rotary isolator switch on the front panel to the OFF position. 5.3 - Open the scavenge valve on the HP unit to enable the pressure to dissipate 5.4 - Once the pressure has dissipated, close the scavenge valve. 5.5 - If the compressor is to be left for an extended period, refit the protective cover.

 Oxygen Membrane Unit

5.6 - Operate power button on the O2 analyser to power down the analyser 5.7 - Switch OFF the green switch on the front of the refrigeration unit.

Renner LP Compressor

5.8 Close the SHUT OFF valve on the LH side of the unit, OFF is with lever 90 degrees to the Black / orange pipe Note: Failure to carry out this task will damage the unit. 5.9 - IMPORTANT - Run the system for a min of 3 mins then press the RED Stop button 5.8 - Turn the Renner LP compressor master switch to OFF (on the RH Side of the unit) 5.9 - Turn off all 3 isolation switches located behind the compressor and lock the HP compressor. 5.10 If the compressor is to be left for an extended period, refit the protective cover.

F-13 Section 6: Faults

6.1 - The HP Compressor display will indicate faults. The AMBER light indicates there has been a fault detected but the system will still operate, the RED light will indicate a critical fault and will stop the compressor.

6.2 - The most likely fault that will be shown will be the Amber “Securus Filter Warning”. This indicates the HP filter is nearing saturation and will require changing. The compressor should be run until the RED light illuminates to ensure maximum use of the filter.

6.3 – The instructions for changing the filter are attached to the side of the compressor.

6.4 – For any other indicated faults contact the Equipment Officer.

G-6 Section 4: Operation.

3 General

4.1 Remove padlock from HP compressor Isolator, then turn on all three electrical Isolators:

4.1.1 Check that the “Red” Light illuminates on the LP compressor. This indicates the unit is “Pre- Heating”

4.2 Check that the Green power indicator on Qty 4 water filter stacks are illuminated in the following locations:

4.2.1 - Qty one located between the LP and the dryer Unit as below. 4.2.2 - Qty one At the base of the LP Reservoir (tall steel cylinder) 4.2.3 - Qty 2 on the rear of the membrane unit.

G-7 4.3 Ensure the “Intake Pressure” lever on the Membrane Unit is in the OFF (Down Position)

Operation Dryer Unit

4.4 Turn on the switch on the top of the refrigerant Unit as below, the switch will illuminate, wait for the green LED to stop flashing.

G-8 Operation LP Compressor

4.5 Turn on the LP Compressor by pressing the “Green Button”

4.6 Check that the pressure on the large Steel Reservoir is rising to or at 10Bar

 If the LP Compressor pressure is higher than indicated on the red mark on the gauge!! STOP the compressor with the red stop button.

 If the LP Compressor oil and operating temperature is higher than 110 °C, the compressor should stop automatically. If the compressor does not stop automatically, switch it off by pressing the red stop button.

G-9 Operation Membrane Unit

4.7 The Membrane unit is set to deliver a NITROX mix of between 32% and 33%. ONLY the “Intake Pressure Valve” is to be operated on this unit. The 02 analyser is not required and will be removed due to testing of cylinders post filling.

4.8 Slowly open the “Intake Pressure Valve”, it should be noted that with the HP compressor not running NITROX will be vented from the Right Hand Side vents, this is normal.

4.9 The “Work Pressure” dial should read between 7-9 Bar.

G-10 Operation HP Compressor

4.10 - Turn the rotary isolator switch on the front panel to the ON position 4.11 - The front LED panel display will illuminate after a 10 second delay 4.12 – Ensure there is a green light on the Serurus module mounted on the filter stack – If this is not green refer to the fault section

4.13 - Connect 4 x Charging whips to Cylinder valves, ensure cylinder valves remain closed.

4.14 - Ensure the 4 x Charging levers are in the DOWN (closed) position

4.15 - Start the compressor by pressing button (I) Green LED will illuminate.

G-11 4.16 - Open the Scavenger Valve and allow the HP compressor to run for 2-3 minutes

THIS MUST BE DONE TO VENT ANY EXCESS CARBON DIOXIDE THAT MAY HAVE BUILT UP IN THE SYSTEM

4.17 - With the scavenge valve Open the pressure will not rise above 50 Bar..

4.18 –After 3 mins close the scavenge valve and observe the pressure rise.

G-12 4.19 - Open the 4 x Charging levers by pulling them UP.

4.20 - Open the 4 x Cylinder valves slowly in case there is a pressure imbalance.

4.21 - The compressor will automatically shut down once it achieves its final working pressure 220 Bar.

4.22 - Close the 4 x Cylinder Valves.

4.23 - Close the 4 x Charging Valve levers by pushing them DOWN. Note: levers auto purge the line.

4.24 - Disconnect the 4 x charging whips.

4.25 - If necessary change cylinders over and connect 4 x charging whips. And continue from step 4.19.

4.26 - Once charging is complete the compressor will shut down as it has achieved its final working pressure.

Section 5: Shutdown procedure HP Compressor Verticus 5

5.1 Stow the 4 x Charging whips on the stowage points provided.

G-13 5.2 Record the number of hours from the HP compressor in the log. 5.3 Turn the rotary isolator switch on the front panel to the OFF position. 5.4 Open the scavenge valve on the HP unit to enable the pressure to dissipate 5.5 Once the pressure has dissipated, close the scavenge valve.

Oxygen Membrane Unit

5.6 Turn the “Intake Pressure” lever on the Membrane Unit to the OFF (Down Position).

LP Compressor & Dryer Unit

5.7 The Renner LP compressor will automatically switch off after a set amount of time (only if step 5.7 above has been completed). The RED stop button must not be pressed except in an emergency.

5.8 Once the LP compressor has shut down turn of the Dryer Unit

5.9 Switch off all three electrical isolators. Refit the Padlock to the HP 3 Phase Isolator.
