Comprehension Questions

1. How did Thomas “kill” the Griever? How did he react to this feat? Why?

Thomas fought it and pulled off one of its arms then stabbed it with a spear. He was stunned and surprised that they could actually be killed. They were so big and mechanical and they were seemingly unbeatable.

2. What happened when Teresa tried to type in the last word, “PUSH”? What were they supposed to do instead?

Nothing happened when she typed in the last word. Chuck said maybe she should just push the red button instead of typing in the word “push”.

3. How many Gladers did they lose in the battle? Who survived? Was it all worth this loss of life? Why or why not? Twenty-one Gladers survived the battle, they lost about half of the people in the battle. Newt, Frypan, Minho, Winston, Thomas, Teresa, and Chuck as well as some others survived. Answers will vary.

4. What did they find at the end of the slide? Why did Thomas, “shudder, terrified”, when he saw it? (p. 351)

They found a room with the Creators inside it. Thomas shuddered because he realizes the people are angry apparitions of people who’d never been happy and were the ones who had done this to Thomas and the others.

5. How did the woman react to the Gladers? How did they react to her? Why?

She told them “welcome back” and said she was amazed there were so few dead. They were angry at her and the others for putting them through all of this for little or no reason.

6. What caused Thomas to “snap” in Chapter 59? What did he do? Why?

The sudden death of Chuck caused him to snap. Chuck had saved his life by stepping in front of the knife Gally threw at Thomas. Thomas cried like he had never cried before while hugging Chuck’s lifeless body.

7. What did Chuck symbolize for Thomas? Why?

Chuck symbolized hope, hope that they could one day make everything right in the world. He had made a promise to Chuck that he would get him home and he really meant to do it for him.

8. What happened to the WICKED woman? Where did the Gladers go? Why?

She was tackled and killed by people who stormed the building. The Gladers went with these people in order to escape from the facility and the Creators.
