Review of events and resources by Susan and Ashley  WisDOT announces annual Saris Cycling Group poster contest – Presented by the Safe Routes to School – Wisconsin Department of Transportation o WisDOT is again collecting posters from fifth-grade students as part of a national poster contest to promote the numerous benefits of bicycling. The theme of this year’s contest is based on John F. Kennedy’s famous quote, “Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride.” The contest, which is sponsored by Saris Cycling Group, awards top prizes such as a free bike or a trip to the National Bike Summit in Washington D.C. Please note that all entries must be postmarked by March 7, 2014. More information is available on the Saris web site.  Susan reported two (2) nursing students will start a Public Health clinical on Thursday, January 23rd 2014 They would be available to assist with a coalition project such as: o Safe Routes To School o Drink Up’ campaign http://www.youarewhatyoudrink.org/ o Nutrition Education in the Schools – The Farm to School Program. Sharing from Coalition Participants  Access to Care—Andrea o Andrea reported that on Saturday, January 11th, 2014, there was an article in the Watertown Daily Times declaring ‘Free Clinic Will Still Be Here’. It mentioned that Obamacare would not prevent the clinic from helping the uninsured. Last month there were 236 visitors to the clinic seeking assistance with: . Mental health issues – 26% . Drug saving program showed the biggest impact in the area of arthritis medications and Asthma inhalers.  Active Community Environments-Cindi and Don o Don had no report on Saturday Morning Walks o In Park and Recreation news, boys basketball, indoor soccer, volleyball, water walking and lap swimming are up and running at this time and all quite successful programs o Fitness classes showed a 15 – 20 person enrollment o The ski trails and the hockey rinks are also a hit o Topic to think about . Discussion occurred about how to engage the 18 – 29 year old population in physical activities. o St. Bernard’s is sponsoring the Irish Jig/Jog 5k and Kids 1k Saturday March 15th 2014. Almost two (2) months left to train for the Irish Jig Jog Run/Walk. This race is part of the March to November 5K series races in Watertown.  Food Systems—Beth and Ashley o Beth reports the next Eat Here, Eat Well meeting is today at 2:00 PM. All are invited to attend. Schools will report on ideas for programming. A few ideas that have been shared at previous meetings are: . Produce Taste Tests . School Gardens . Farm Visits o Ashley shared a link to a webinar titled ‘Creating Healthy Menus in Early Child Care and Education Settings on Tuesday, February 11th at 2:30 PM CST. This webinar may be helpful for school personnel. . https://www4.gotomeeting.com/register/285191391 o The Healthy Food Summit is coming up Friday, January 31st and Saturday, February 1st. They are gathering in Milwaukee for the 8th Annual Wisconsin Local Food Summit. The:2014 WLFN Summit Registration Brochure o Last month’s fund raiser went well. Wisconsin products, like pure vanilla were sold. Beth stated that all monies will be used locally to support several small starts up projects within our schools. School districts were encouraged to contact Beth with ideas and or proposals for funding. o Beth’s shared a hand-out from Eat Here Eat Well, ‘A Wealth of Squashes’ had a delicious recipe using carnival squash. Give it a try.
