Dover Sherborn METCO Newsletter November 2012
“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change we seek.”- President Barack Obama News & Events: Nov. 8-10 DSHS presents a production of Crucible featuring our own Deanna Biddy Nov. 12: Veteran’s Day No School Nov 14: Elementary School ½ Day. Host Family Play date Nov 21: District Wide ½ Day Nov. 22,23,26: No School Information & Updates Health Office: Flu Season is upon us! Keep your family safe and make an appointment to get vaccinated. If your child has a temperature they must be picked up from school and may not ride the bus home. Please notify the health office if your child will be staying home sick. Make sure all students have updated health forms and prescriptions at school this includes inhalers and Epi Pens. Quarter 1: The middle and high school students have completed Quarter 1. Grades will be posted at the end of next week. Please make sure to check student grades! If you are unable to access the online portal, please contact the school. We can also provide you with a hard copy of student report cards. Students who have earned a C or lower in any core subject will be meeting with me to go over an plan for bringing up their grades. Students who earned Honor Roll will be invited to a pizza party to celebrate their hard work. Make sure to check in with your child frequently and if you are having concerns about their progress contact us to set up a time to meet. Host Family Program: If your child is planning on staying in Dover or Sherborn for a play date next week make sure to send in a note no later than Tuesday, Nov 13. If all elementary students are staying we will not run an early bus. Taxi: Please remind of the taxi protocol, stated in the parent student contract, taxis must be ordered at the front desk of the high school before 10 am each school day. This prevents double cabs from being ordered and allows us to keep track of who is still on campus. Students are not permitted to order their own cabs. If an emergency situation should occur, students should ask the staff member who is with them to call and order the cab. We have had several occurrences this year of double ordering and cabs being ordered and not taken- this significantly impacts our cab budget and will make it difficult for us to ensure that all students have the opportunity to utilize the cabs come spring. Total Fund for 2012-13 School year: 9,000 Amount per cab ride: $80 Total Amount spent as of October 1: $3,360 Funds Remaining: $5,640 School Closings and Delays: As the weather gets colder and more unpredictable remember to keep an eye and ear open for potential school closings. Dover Sherborn will make an automated phone call and report in to the news stations. I will also send a text out to parents and older students whose phone numbers I have. If you would like to be included in the text or have not been receiving the phone messages from the school, contact me. We make every effort to ensure that students commute to and from school is safe. If the road conditions in Boston are such that you feel the commute or wait at the bus stop would be dangerous please contact my cell phone ASAP. .Focus of the Month: Time Management Each day students are asked to write down their assignments and upcoming tests in their agenda books. These books are tools to help students in all grades efficiently plan out their time. When your child arrives home from school have a set routine in place each evening. Allow students to use a calendar to plan out what they will do each night and how long it will take them. If your child is easily distracted, have them complete homework in a quiet area where you can keep an eye on them. Some children focus better when they are allowed to listen to music but TV watching should not be permitted during homework time. When your child is done with their homework take several minutes to go through the agenda book and check off all completed work.
Example: 2nd Grader Schedule Monday Night 5:30 pm: math work sheet 5:45: SS map- study states for test on Friday 6:00: Dinner 6:30: Read for 30 min 7:00: Free time
