Exploring Chlorine

Purpose: To observe the element chlorine and its reaction to other compounds.

Materials: Girls, tie your hair back. Iron chloride – out of this one hand lens Calcium chloride aluminum foil – tear off small piece Sodium Chloride water Copper (II) chloride small spoon, glass beakers for chemicals Ammonia goggles Metric ruler Chem tray Plastic beaker for water

IMPORTANT: Do not taste or smell any of the chemicals. Be careful not to get the iron chloride on your clothes.

Procedure:

Part I: 1. Place half a spoonful of the calcium chloride in Cup A of the Chem tray. 2. Place half a spoonful of the sodium chloride in Cup B of the Chem tray. 3. Place half a spoonful of the copper chloride in Cup C of the Chem tray. 4. Observe each with the hand lens and write your observations in the appearance column in the data table.

Part II: 1. Add 20 drops of water to each Cup A of the Chem Tray. 2. Feel the bottom of the tray cup and record any change in the data table. If there is no change, indicate that in the data table. 3. Repeat these steps for Cup B and Cup C of the Chem tray.

Part III: 1. Tear a piece of aluminum foil approximately 1 cm by 1 cm square and drop it into Cup A of the Chem tray. 2. Record your observations in the data table. 3. Repeat these steps for Cup B and Cup C. Part IV: 1. Wash out Cups A,B,C of the Chem Tray. Please do this at the teacher clean-up sink. Make sure there is no chemical left in the Cups. They do not have to be dry. 2. Place half a spoonful of the calcium chloride in Cup A of the Chem tray. 3. Place half a spoonful of the sodium chloride in Cup B of the Chem tray. 4. Place half a spoonful of the copper chloride in Cup C of the Chem tray. 5. Add 20 drops of water to each Cup. 6. Add 5 drops of ammonia to each Cup. Record your observations in the data table.
