3 As a member of the Gorilla Engagement Squad, I vow to record, capture, reproduce, and analyze the statements and thoughts discussed at the 2009 Communications Network Conference. I recognize that this is my duty as a squad member, and that no obstacles (be they free cookies, coffee breaks, or company give-aways) will prevent me from completing my duty to the best of my ability. I will remember all parts of my basic training, and will use the tools taught to me to the utmost of my ability. I will work as a squad member first, and an individual second. Finally, I vow to do all work in the name of good communications techniques, remembering that all I do will help those that come after me.

Signed, ______

4 Always Tweet using #comnet09

Twitter Guidelines:

-Whether you’re using a computer or phone to interface with Twitter, there are various ways to Tweet. To figure out which is best for you, read on…

Option 1: Use www.Twitter.com. This is the original- it has a good user interface, and the ability to do searches, find people to follow, and of course, Tweet.

Option 2: Use your mobile phone and SMS texting. On www.Twitter.com, after you sign in, go to Settings  Devices. Then, turn the Mobile Phone option “on” by adding your phone number. Once this is finished, every time you send a text 40404, the message will be turned into a Tweet!

Option 3: Use any number of 3rd-party programs that will manage your Twitter account(s) and updates for you. All programs that we recommend below are available for free, and will allow you to Tweet from various usernames at once, and interact with Twitter in a very user-friendly environment (i.e. automatically shortening links in Tweets, showing TwitPics inside the program, automatic Re-Tweeting, etc.).

Helpful Hints:

-Try to put as much information about what panel you’re Tweeting about in each update.

5 -Including links always makes the “value” of your Tweet higher.

-To shorten a link in your Tweet, try using www.tinyurl.com or http://bit.ly/

Twitter Basics:

Hash Tags (#): If you would like to define your Tweet as a member of a certain topic group, so that it can be easily searched by others later, use a hash tag (#) in your Tweet. For example, every conference attendee is encouraged to add “#comnet09” to the beginning or end of their Tweets while at the conference, so that followers will know to what topic the Tweet relates. See below for an example. (The right sidebar on Twitter allows you to search all hash tags that exist in Twitter- this is a great way to find Tweets on a specific topic, i.e. philanthropy or communications.)

Direct Address (@): If you want to direct your Tweet at a particular person or organization, use the “@” symbol, followed by the username of the target, before you Tweet. See below for an example.

Re-Tweeting (RT): If you would like to repeat what another Twitter user has Tweeted, it is called “Re-Tweeting.” You start out by writing the letters “RT,” followed by a direct address (@) of the person whose Tweet you’d like to repeat. Then, copy and paste the Tweet that you’d like to repeat, and you’ve done it! For example, see below, where a Gorilla member Re- Tweeted @PhilanthroMedia’s post about diavlogs.

6 Always ask the name and position of the interviewee before, and during, the interview (so it is recorded in hard copy and on the video).

Questions to ask interviewees:

Option #1: Describe one contributor to excellence in foundation communications that hasn’t changed in the past five years. Describe one thing that has changed.

Option #2: What is the most innovative idea you’ve ever had for how to make foundation communications better?

Option #3: What is your take-away from this session?
