6WHEREAS: 7 Private sector union membership continues to decline; and 8 9 WHEREAS: 10 States passing “right to work” laws are increasing in numbers; and 11 12WHEREAS: 13 Public opinion research shows that most United States workers would join a union if able 14 to, and 15 16WHEREAS: 17 Assisting in increasing private sector union membership and wages (which currently lag 18behind public sector workers by a 21% median according to the United States Bureau of Labor) 19is the best way to protect the collective bargaining rights of public sector employees; and 20 21WHEREAS: 22 The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 23 states that 23“everyone has the right to form and to join trade union for the protection of his/her interests. 24 25THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: 26 That Council 2 advocate for the immediate repeal of the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947; and 27 28BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: 29 That Council 2 advocate for and support passage of legislation at both the federal and 30state level to ensure that an employees’ fundamental human right to organize and join a union to 31improve wages, benefits and working conditions is protected and enhanced. 32 33 34 35Respectfully Submitted: 36 37 38Rebekah Johnson 39Local 1553 40
