Newsletter 9 1 June 2017

Welcome New Students A very warm welcome to 5 year old Richie Taylor who started his school days at Gladstone School last week. It is great to have you join our Gladstone School team Richie and we look forward to sharing all the great activities with you in the term ahead. Our current school roll 135 students.

Farewell Students We said farewell to Ruby Everton and Otira Jackson-Ruhe recently and wish them all the very best at their new schools.

Maori Hui - Postponed Our sincere apologies for the postponement of this hui once again. Our Maori Hui is now planned for the 5th of July 2017 at 5.30pm - 6.30pm. This will be an opportunity to celebrate the end of Matariki and an opportunity to gather whānau community thoughts on how we can best meet the needs of our Maori students and their whānau so that we can ensure all our students achieve success. Further information will be in the next newsletter. We warmly welcome all members of our school community to attend this Hui. Gladstone School Senior Hub Kourarau Dam Planting

Our Senior Hub students had an amazing learning experience last week when they were involved in planting close to 2000 trees on the areas around the Kourarau Dam. This opportunity assisted them to further their Inquiry Learning, being able to Take Action in their local community. They were able to work with Greater Wellington Regional Council, Farmers, Enviro School Facilitators and Ra Smith (Kahugnunu ki Wairarapa) to gain further knowledge about this special local environment. Thank you to all the parents who came along and supported our students on this outing.

Senior School Promotion – Parent Meeting Y5 – Y8 We extend a warm invitation to any interested parents of Y5 – Y7 students to our school Promotion Meeting being held on Thursday, 29th June 2017 at 2pm, in the staffroom (as indicated on the Term 2 school calendar). This meeting is an opportunity for parents of Y5 to Y7 students, to become informed about what Gladstone School has to offer to our senior students. As we would like all our students to remain at Gladstone School for their intermediate school years, this meeting will also provide us the opportunity to gather information about the types of learning parents would like their children to be involved in during their time as seniors at Gladstone School. If you are the parent of younger children and are interested in this topic you are most welcome to join us also. During part of this meeting Geoff Shepherd, Principal of Kuranui College, will be there to get the views from Gladstone School families to see if they would be interested in having a bus from Gladstone to Kuranui College for secondary students. If you cannot make the meeting but would like to find out more about either topic please give me a call at school this term.

Winter sport is underway – tips for avoiding injuries The winter sport season is now underway with lots of our students signed up for a team sport. Injuries are inevitable in any sport but there are ways to avoid getting hurt on the field, turf or court this winter. Here are some tips for keeping our players injury-free and on the field this season.  Get kids to warm up before sports games or exercise – to play better and be kind to young muscles.  Also get them to cool down and stretch afterwards – to avoid getting cramp and muscle injuries.  It’s important to drink before, during and after sport – to keep energy levels up during the game.  Check they’re wearing a mouthguard, shin pads and other protective gear.  Remind them to watch out for others – on the field or court.  Keep the exercise up in between games – to keep fitness levels up.  For sprains and strains, follow the RICED guidelines: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation and get a Diagnosis if needed.

If an injury does happen, call your medical centre to see if they can help. If it’s at the weekend, the Wairarapa After Hours service based at Masterton Medical is open 9am- 5pm. Contact them on 06 370 0011 or call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for free medical advice 24 hours a day.
