Before Reading Vocabulary: High Frequency—could, Phonics/Mechanics: “ed” suffix—cheered, picked, wanted, great moved, looked, yelled, scored, swished, watched Content Vocabulary—

Comprehension Strategy: Identify beginning, Activate/Build Background Knowledge: middle, end—characters, problem, solution Have you ever been new to a school before or been somewhere that you didn’t know the people you were with very well? How did you feel? Has anyone new moved into your school? How do you think they feel? Today we are going to read a story about a boy who is new to a school and what happens to him. Let’s read to find out why the book is entitled —“Last One Picked.” During Reading Using appropriate Guided reading strategies, students will be reading at their own pace and teachers will be listening to students read, monitoring, giving feedback, taking anecdotal notes and running records.

Attend to Comprehension Within, Beyond, & About the text: After Reading Within the Text—Who are the characters? Talk about what happened at the first of the story? Then want happened? What was the new boy’s problem in the story? How did he solve his problem? Beyond the Text—What lesson did the other kids in the story learn? What lesson did you learn? Have you ever had an experience like the character? How can you be a friend to others? Why do you think the book was entitled “ Last One Picked”? When they play basketball again do you think he will be the last one picked?

High Frequency—Put words on cards. Find the word in the text (could page 4—wanted page 4 great-- page 16) Practice using magnetic white boards and letters. Make the word, write the word, mix up the letters. Fix the letters in the correct order. Write the word from memory.

Phonics—Talk about “ed” suffix Sometimes ed has the /d/ sound, other times the /t/ sound. Demonstrate with picked /t/ wanted /d/ When you see a word with ed in a book, use the prompt, look for parts you know. ---Cover up part. Look for root words and then add “ed” ending Practice with words in book: cheered, picked, moved, looked, yelled, scored, swished, watched.

Comprehension—Look for what happens in the beginning, middle, end. Look for the problem which is usually in the beginning of the story and then look in the middle to find out how the main characters work to solve the problem. Look to the end to see how the problem is solved. (May do this part at the end of activating prior knowledge) For a more detailed script on this concept see “I’m on the Phone” lesson plan—Level H
