Fellowship Guidelines The Alice Rowan Swanson Fellowship is awarded to students who have participated in SIT Study Abroad programs, including IHP, at World Learning and would like to return to the country of their program to pursue further development projects which benefit human rights in the target country. For the purposes of this fellowship, human rights are defined by the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights: primary and secondary education, nutrition and health care, labor rights, freedom from tyranny, slavery, and torture, and any other rights defined by that document. The fellowship may fund transportation to and from the destination, living expenses in a homestay environment, project expenses including capital projects, interest charges on student loans serviced by the student during the period of the fellowship, and any other expenses reasonably incurred by the student in pursuit of this project, at the student’s discretion, but always subject to the terms of the Fellowship Agreement. Reference Guidelines SIT Study Abroad alumni should have the reference form completed by their former Academic Director. International Honors Program alumni should have the reference form completed by the Country Coordinator of the region they wish to complete their fellowship project in. If you cannot reach the suggested individual for your reference, please contact The World Learning Advancement Office at [email protected] at least two weeks prior to the application deadline.

Application Guidelines and Deadlines World Learning and SIT Study Abroad welcome your interest in the Alice Rowan Swanson Fellowship. Please complete the fellowship application form below, and have the appropriate individual complete the reference form (available online). Applications are reviewed twice annually in March and October. Completed applications must be submitted to [email protected] by March 1st or October 1st, no later than 5:00PM (EST).

Project Merit Consideration will be given to the amount of good contributed by the project, as well as an assessment of the candidate’s qualification to accomplish the proposed goal. How do you view your project and your qualifications in this regard? 100 words.

World View Consideration will be given to a candidate whose experiences and future plans show an active interest in world affairs and who has a clear purpose of how the project abroad experience relates to her/his future goals. How do you see the world and your future in it? 200 words.

Fellowship Conditions: The Family of Alice Rowan Swanson is interested in your project, and will be included in the award decisions.
