Pre-Advanced Placement and Advanced Placement Program Expectations and Course Agreement

Student’s Name: ______Course Title: Pre-AP World History

Parents and students are to read the following course description carefully before signing the Pre-AP/AP Contract.

Program Overview: The purpose for College Board Pre-Advanced and Advanced Placement (Pre-AP and AP) courses is to prepare students for college work and the AP exams that give students the opportunity to receive college credit. These courses are different from the regular high school courses in that they include content immersion, a fast pace, and assessment of performance at the analysis and synthesis levels. The Advanced Placement courses are taught with college curricula and college level materials. Success requires student commitment to the expectations of the program.

Students will be expected to: Learn, analyze, synthesize, and manipulate knowledge and skills; think critically; budget time effectively and efficiently; develop successful study skills; engage in electronically-assisted research and/or communications; develop advanced content area vocabulary; communicate effectively in writing and verbally; model good classroom behavior; and commit to an agreement supporting the Pre-AP/ AP program and expectations. Typically, successful Pre-AP and AP students are task oriented, proficient readers, who are able to prioritize their time and who have parental support.

Gifted and Talented Students: In order to receive gifted and talented services in their identified area, GT students will be required to complete the GT requirements located in the BISD ALPS Policy.

Student: I agree to organize my time and effort to complete successfully the above–named course. I have read the program overview and the agreement; understand the workload and the requirements of the class. I will notify the teacher immediately if I fall behind in class readings or assignments.

Parent: I agree to be familiar with the above-named course requirements and to help my son/daughter organize study time in support of class assignments. I will notify the teacher immediately of any concern that I have relating to the class or my child’s progress.

Teacher: I agree to teach the above-named course at the appropriate level and pace as outlined by the College Board. Students and parents will be notified immediately if assignments and/or assessments are unsatisfactory. Exiting Policy: Students who feel the rigors of a Pre-AP/AP course is not for them will be recommended for withdrawal from the Pre-AP/AP course and be placed in a corresponding regular course.

Honor Code: This class will be conducted under an honor code. All students will be expected to do their own work. Occasionally, students will be given projects or exams that must be completed outside of class. If a student breaks this code, it will result in a grade of zero on the assignment or assessment and may result in the student being removed from the course.
