SECTION 09905 – STRUCTURAL METAL PRIMER/FINISH
PART 1 - GENERAL
0.1 SUMMARY
A. This Section includes surface preparation and shop painting (or post fabrication painting) of primer/finish coatings on structural metals.
0.2 DEFINITIONS
A. Types of Defects 1. Physical: Conditions of the coating surface that will affect performance. 2. Visual: Aberrations in the coating surface that do not affect performance, but detract from a smooth, even surface.
B. Shop Painting: Painting of surfaces before delivery to construction site. This coating is usually applied after fabrication.
0.3 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
A. Performance Requirements 1. Owner’s intent is to reduce the types of hazardous and potentially hazardous materials in Owner’s facilities. This includes risk to employees and the environment for initial and maintenance exposures, and final disposal. a. Products used shall not contain heavy metal compounds, including lead and chromates. b. Refer to DaimlerChrysler document ETI-102. 2. This coating will perform as finish coat. a. Visual defects, such as cloudiness, spotting, holidays, laps, brush marks, runs, sags, or ropiness that can be seen from 15 feet under installed lighting conditions are not acceptable.
0.4 SUBMITTALS
A. Product data for coating system.
B. Manufacturer's Representative report immediately after each shop visit shall faxed to the Owner’s Representative.
0.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Applicator Qualifications: Applicator must be able to demonstrate successful application of these coatings consistently and to the satisfaction of the coating manufacturer and Owner before coating application for this Work is started.
B. Source Limitations: Coating and coating manufacturer must be on Owner’s lists of coatings approved for use and vendors of good standing.
C. Manufacturer's Representative Inspection/Assistance: Coating manufacturer Owner will engage a qualified independent testing agency to perform preconstruction testing indicated below. Retesting of materials failing to meet specified requirements shall be done at Contractor's expense.

0.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Store materials to receive and that have received coating off the ground. 1. Wash materials that become soiled or otherwise defaced. 2. Repair or replace damaged materials as directed.
B. Handle coated materials in a manner to prevent damage to coating. Prepare for transportation to the site to protect against damage to the coating or accumulation of road dirt, erosion or deterioration.
0.7 PROJECT CONODITIONS
A. Environmental Requirements: From four hours before coating application until completion of application, the ambient and steel surface temperature shall be not less than 50 deg F, also not less 5 deg F above dewpoint.

B. During Coating Work: Manufacturer’s representative shall return to each shop where coating is being peformed. 1. Frequency: One visit per week during coating operations. 2. Observe coating operations and assist Applicator in making any revisions that would increase the success of coating application.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
0.1 COATING APPLICATION PROCEDURE
A. Surface Preparation 1. Clean surfaces to be coated. Remove deleterious materials, including rust, mill scale, spatter, slag, and flux deposits. Comply with coating manufacturer's recommendations; as a minimum surface preparation shall be in compliance with the following Structural Steel Painting Council (SSPC) specifications: a. SSPC-SP6 “Commercial Blast Cleaning”
B. Apply asphaltic paint after steel erection, but prior to placement of concrete slab, to the base of structural steel columns embedded in concrete slab. Application shall also encapsulate base plate and anchor bolts.
C. Coating Application 1. Just Before Application a. Wipe surfaces to be coated to remove loose dust and other debris. b. Apply tape or masking film to surfaces that will receive high-strength bolted slip- critical connections. 2. Application: Apply coating according to manufacturer’s instructions and at rate recommended by coating manufacturer to provide required dry film thickness. a. Minimum Dry Film Thickness: 3.0 mils, but not less than thickness recommended by coating manufacturer. b. Use coating application method that results in full coverage of joints, corners, edges, and exposed surfaces. c. Stripe coat (double coat) corners, crevices, bolts, welds, and sharp edges.
D. Curing or Drying 1. Work with coating manufacturer’s representative to optimize drying and curing conditions. 2. Protect newly coated surfaces from dust and contaminants.

0.2 REPAIR
A. Immediately after erection, clean field welds, bolted connections, and abraded coating areas according to SSPC SP-2 “Hand Tool Cleaning.”
B. When ambient temperature is 50 deg F and rising, unless otherwise required by coating manufacturer, apply touch-up coating to exposed areas using same materials and color as used for shop coating. Apply coating by brush to provide a minimum dry film thickness of 3.0 mils.
