Charleston Spring Coed Charleston February 16th-17th, 2013 420/FJ
Saturday, February 16:
Racing got underway at 10:20 on Crab Bank under clear skies for the 18 teams that braved the sub- tropical temperatures. Four races in each division were completed using inner and outer trapezoidal courses in a shifty 8-15 knot northwesterly. One more race was completed after lunch using course 5B, a modified gold cup, in a strong ebb tide before racing was called for the day. An approaching front produced winds gusting into the thirties and conditions on the Cooper River became quite gamey. No breakdowns or protests were filed.
Sunday, February 17:
Four races were completed using modified gold cup courses in a 15-25 knot northwesterly and flooding tide. Sailors hung on during the short-lived reach legs while the 420s skipped across the water. Rumor has it one team ‘demolished’ the 31.7 knots achieved by a moth sailor on Saturday. Several capsizes and pitch poles accompanied by unusually cold temperatures forced the race committee to send the fleet in around 1 PM- our rescue swimmer was greatly appreciative. There were no breakdowns and one protest was filed but was withdrawn. Thank you to the team of twenty undergrads who helped run a successful event. Congratulations to the College of Charleston Cougars for winning the 2013 Charleston Spring Coed.

Now to say goodbye to a great man that has provided so much for the MCSA.
While my family home is East Lansing, MI, I currently live near Ann Arbor, where I designed and built my home. I graduated from the College of Wooster in 1961 after sailing for four years for that school with a major in Chemistry. I was usually near the top of the MCSA Skipper standings while sailing in College. I taught in Junior High school and High school before obtaining a Master’s Degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1966. I joined Washtenaw Community College as a Chemistry Instructor in 1967 and spent 10 years in that position before becoming Chair of the Physical Science Department. I continued to teach for another 12 years in that capacity before being appointed as Dean of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. I held that position for 10 years before the need for a liver transplant forced my retirement in 1999.
I was Race Chairman of the MCSA in 1960. I became Graduate Secretary of the MCSA in 1962 and held that position until 1994. I also served as MCSA Treasurer for the later part of that period. During that time I also served as Graduate Secretary for the ICSA from 1974 - 1987. I was elected to the ICSA Hall of Fame in 1973, and was honored again in 2000 with one of the first Hall of Fame Lifetime Service Awards. I serve on the ICSA All America Selection Committee, Rules Committee, and am Chair of the ICSA Eligibility Committee. Over the years I have served as Chair of a half - dozen ICSA National Championships.
Currently, I also serve as the MCSA Webmaster, and Tell Tale Editor. This past year I have been involved in the establishment of the MCSA Foundation
I have been a US SAILING Certified Senior Judge since 1982. I usually judge about 30 events a year including many collegiate, and US SAILING and Class Championships. I served two four-year terms as Chair of the US SAILING Singlehanded Championship Committee (O’Day Trophy).
In my spare time I have built perpetual trophies for MCSA, US SAILING, and other events. I also am in the process of rebuilding my G Scale garden railroad.
It is important to keep busy while in retirement.
