Color Wheel and Value Charts

Supplies needed: palette, palette knife, canvas panel or Artist Canvas Pad approximately 16 x 20 inches, cadmium red medium, cadmium yellow medium, cobalt blue, black, white

Panel #1 (a) Make a Color wheel using primary colors, complementary colors, and secondary colors. (b) Value Chart Extension –

 On the same panel make seven 1” squares or boxes using a ruler.  In square number 1 put black (straight out of the tube).  In square number 7 fill in with white only.  In square number 4 mix ½ black to ½ white.  In square number 6 add very little black to white.  Now extend from black to white

Panel # 2 Primary Color Mixing Pigments needed: white, black, Cadmium red medium, Cobalt blue , Cadmium yellow medium, Alizarin Crimson, Yellow Ochre, & Cerulean Blue

Step 1-Make a grid. Make grid so that it is divided into one inch squares with five rows. Leave some room at the bottom of each column so that you can label it with the specific colors that you used or take other notes.

Step 2 - pick primary color Cadmium Red Medium to start with.

Step 3- With your palette knife, fill in the top left square of your grid with red, straight from the tube.

Step 4 Next fill in the very bottom square of the same column with a mixture of white and a touch of the red.

Step 5 Now create a mixture of white and red with a value that is half way between the top and bottom values and put that in the middle square.

Step 6 Now create a mixture of the Cad. Red and white with a value that is half way between the first and third squares and put that mixture in the second square Step 7- Repeat the same process for the remaining squares and you have your first column of color swatches completed. You now have five different values of Cadmium red medium.

Step 8- Now you can move on to the next column. This time try mixing with Alizirin Crimson.

Step 9- Repeat each step for each color. Keep the reds together, blues together and yellows together.

Panel #3 Complementary Color Mixing

 Mix a yellow & blue to make green than follow steps 1-6 by adding white  Now mix a red & blue to make violet (purple) than follow steps 1-6 adding white  Now mix a red & yellow to make orange than follow steps 1-6 + white

Secondary Color Mixing

 Mix Red & Green to get new color than follow steps 1-6 +white  Mix Yellow & Blue “ “ “” “ “ “ “ “  Mix Blue & Orange “ “ “ “ “ “ “ “ “ “

Panel #4 Adding Black to Primary ,Complementary & Secondary Colors

 Repeat Steps 1-7 only adding Black as a substitute for the white

Panel #5 Primary Colors + Mineral Spirits or Turpentine

 Repeat Steps 1-7 substituting Oderless Mineral Spirits or Turpentine for white. (Panel should be work on while it is in a flat level position

Panel #6

 Same as above only for Complementary & Secondary Color Mixing
