Hieronymous Praetorius brilliant choral music from Hamburg at the turn of the 17th century

A workshop for singers Tutor: Andrew Carwood

Works to include:

Canite tuba Oratio Dominica A solis ortus cardine Benedictio Mensae Hieronymus Praetorius (1560 –1629) Praetorius was a north German composer and organist of the late Renaissance and very early Baroque eras. He wrote masses, ten settings of the Magnificat, and numerous motets, mostly in Latin. Most of his music is in the Venetian polychoral style, which uses numerous voices divided into several groups. These compositions are the first to be written in north Germany in the progressive Venetian style. Choir sizes range from 8 to 20, with the voices divided into two, three or four groups, and he must have had well-trained and sophisticated musicians at his disposal, considering both the amount and the difficulty of music he wrote for these ensembles. Most of his vocal music is a cappella.

Andrew Carwood

Andrew Carwood is one of the most versatile musicians of his generation, having had an illustrious career as a singer before focusing on conducting and choral direction. He trained as a choral scholar at St John’s College Cambridge, a lay clerk at Christ Church Oxford and Westminster Cathedral, and was Director of Music at the Brompton Oratory for five years. He has become a widely-acknowledged expert on music from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and is known for the scholarly and entertaining way in which he introduces concerts, breaking down barriers between audience and performers and allowing the music to speak even more eloquently. In 2007 he was appointed Director of Music at St Paul’s Cathedral (the first non- organist to hold such a post since the 12th century). Most recently he directed the music at HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012, the funeral of Baroness Thatcher in 2013, and the service for the end of military operations in Afghanistan in 2015. Andrew Carwood has recorded for ASV and Hyperion, and last year made his debut on Decca. With The Cardinall’s Musick he has received five Gramophone Awards including in 2010 not only the Gramophone Award for Early Music but also the coveted Record of the Year Award.
