Chapter 31 through 40 Summaries and Analysis
Summary Jane and Jesse go on their first date, and they hit it off, even though Jesse is a player. Jane is even surprised at how well they get along; especially since she thought it would be uncomfortable since Jesse is Braden’s best friend. The next chapter goes on to Trevor watching the footage from the date and he is extremely pleased because it turns out exactly how he wants it to, and he can see himself getting very high ratings as a result of Jane and Jesse’s new relationship. Chapter 33 is when Madison and Gaby go visit Scarlett and get a tour of USC. Scarlett is less than pleased because Madison and Gaby are extra annoying during the visit and she is already an impatient person. Another significant event that takes place is Jane making a new friend at work, who is named Hannah, and she and Jane become friends quickly because Hannah is very easy to talk to. In the meantime, it is Jesse’s birthday and this night is horrible. Jesse is drunk and he hits on Scarlett leaving Jane embarrassed and ashamed. She realizes that maybe she should have believed Braden all along, but now it is too late, because the damage is done. Chapter 40 is by far the most eventful chapter of the book and it begins with Jane lying in her bed because she is so embarrassed and upset about the whole situation with Jesse. There is a knock on the door, and it turns out to be Braden and he ends up spending the night with Jane. The next morning, as she wakes up, she reads a text from Jesse that says that he is coming over because she won’t pick up any of his calls/ answer his texts. Panicking, Jane sends Braden away and Jesse shows up, messily clad and smelling of smoke. They hug and Jane sees a note from Braden taped to her dresser. Freaking out, she snatches the note and hides it. The chapter ends with Jane telling Scarlett that she is totally fine, but she doesn’t mention Braden or Jesse.
Analysis This is the most intense part of the book, and for many reasons. First of all, Jane realizes that Jesse is the player that everyone flagged him to be and she was too oblivious to see it. After seeing him hit on Scarlett at his birthday party at Goa, she realizes that he is exactly the scum that everyone told her he was. When Braden comes to check on Jane, it shows that he really like her in spite of Willow. But again, when Jesse comes to see her, it shows that he too also likes her. This part remains completely a mystery to the reader because Lauren Conrad gives no clues as to who Jane is going to pick, or if she is going to pick either of them. I think that it was smart of Lauren Conrad to include this in the book, because it provided an very necessary attention- getter as well as cliffhanger.
