Since forming in 2004, Duo Spiritoso [guitarists Jeffrey McFadden and Andrew Zohn] has performed throughout North America and Europe to high audience praise. Considered widely to be among today's most accomplished guitar duos, they continue to delight with nuanced and energetic performances in a wide range of musical styles. Duo Spiritoso has been invited to perform at major guitar festivals including the Toronto Guitar Symposium, the Guitar Foundation of America Convention, Kras Festival (Slovenia), Guitare Rotterdam (Netherlands), the Festival Mediterraneo della Chitarra, and the Ravenna Festival (Italy). Performances by Duo Spiritoso have been broadcast on both the CBC and National Public Radio. Their unique programming has included such diverse composers as, Rossini, Assad, Machado, and Mozart. Duo Spiritoso’s first self-titled CD was released in May 2007 on Clear Note (USA). Critics have raved about the disc saying “Duo Spiritoso's debut CD is a powerhouse of duo playing and a treasure trove of inventive transcriptions. Their great ensemble and easy execution allow one to enjoy the pieces not as transcriptions but as beautiful music. This is a great new duo!” (Rosewood Review). Their second CD, featuring the music of Enrique Granados, will be released in the fall of 2011. McFadden has performed to great acclaim across North America and Europe after winning numerous awards and competition prizes in the 1990’s. He has recorded seven highly celebrated CD’s with the Naxos label, which have sold in the tens of thousands of copies. He is heard frequently on CBC/Radio-Canada and on NPR in the United States. A senior lecturer in guitar and an Eaton Graduate fellow at the University of Toronto, Dr. McFadden is also the founder and artistic director of the Sauble Beach Guitar Festival. His groundbreaking book Fretboard Harmony: Common-Practice Harmony on the Guitar (Les Productions d'OZ) was published in 2010. Zohn has been acclaimed as both a performer and composer. He has won prizes in five international competitions and has given performances on four continents including venues in Buenos Aires, Honolulu, Beijing, Vancouver, New York, Cairo, and San Francisco. He currently serves on the faculty of Columbus State University in Georgia, where he directs the CSU Guitar Symposium. Regarded highly as a teacher, students of Andrew Zohn have won numerous prizes in international competitions and have appeared on National Public Radio.
