Book of Demise of various tenements and lands in Craven, with various arrears formerly pending in the same place, Made by Edmund Eltoftes esquire, Thomas Talbott gentleman, John Swynglehirst and Lawrence Preston, By virtue of a certain commission of our noble lord, Henry, Earl of Cumberland, directed to the aforesaid commissioners, bearing date the 16th day of December in the first year of the reign of Queen Mary, just as fully appears in this book of demise.

Richard Foster took from the lord, through his commissioners, one messuage, with the appurtenances, in the same place, now in his tenure, to hold to him, for the term of his life. And he renders annually 6s, and for entry/gersum as appears.

Gersum 40s

William Payley, the son of Thomas Payley, took as before one messuage and one bovate of demesne land, with the appurtenances, in the same place, by warrant, to hold to him etc for the term of his life. And he renders annually 10s, and for entry/gersum as appears.

Roger Armysted, the son of Paul Armysted, took from the said Commissioners, by warrant, one messuage, with the appurtenances, and certain land appertaining to the same messuage, in the same place, to hold to him, for the term of his life. And he renders annually 10s, and for entry/gersum as appears.

Lawrence Smyth took from the said Commissioners one cottage, by warrant, lately in the tenure of Hugh Smyth, to hold to him, for the term of his life, provided however that he should permit the relict of the said Hugh Smyth to have a moiety of the said cottage during her widowhood, and that he should pay to the said relict, during her widowhood, every week, one penny. And he renders annually 2s, and for entry/gersum as appears.

Bernard Brown, the son of John Brown, took as before one tenement in the same place, with the appurtenances, now in his tenure of the said John his father, by warrant, to hold to him, for the term of his life, after the death of the aforesaid John his father. And he renders annually 21s, and for entry/gersum as appears. Gersum 10s

Adam Carre, by the surrender of Richard Newhouse, took one two parcels of meadow next to Huntwhayt Thornes, by warrant, now in the tenure of Isabel Payley, widow, to hold to him, for the term of his life, after the death widowhood of the said Isabel. And he renders annually 6d, and for entry/gersum as appears.

Richard Preston, the son of William Preston, took as before one messuage and one bovate of land, and one parcel of demesne land, now in the tenure of the said William, to hold to him, for the term of his life, after the death of the said William his father and the widowhood of his wife. And he renders annually in respect thereof 23s 10½d, and for entry/gersum etc.

Robert Brashay, the son of Richard Brashay, took from the aforesaid commissioners one messuage, with the appurtenances, in the same place, now in the tenure of the said Richard, to hold to him, for the term of his life, after the death of the aforesaid Richard. And he renders annually 23s, and for entry/gersum as appears, over and above 9s released and forgiven by the lord by reason of poverty.

William Rome, the son of John Rome, took from the said commissioners one messuage and one bovate of land, with the appurtenances, and one parcel of demesne land, now in the tenure of the said John, to hold to him, for the term of his life, after the death of the aforesaid John his father, and his wife during her widowhood. And he renders annually 20s 9½d, and for entry/gersum as appears.

Hugh Webster, the son of John Webster, took as before, by warrant, one messuage, with the appurtenances, in the same place, in the tenure of the said John, to hold to him, after the death of the aforesaid John his father, for the term of his life. And he renders annually 24s 8d, and for entry/gersum as appears, over and above 13s released and forgiven by the lord by reason of poverty.

James Payley, the son of Robert Payley, took from the said commissioners, by warrant, one messuage, with the appurtenances, in the same place, at Mewyth, now in the tenure of the said John Robert, to hold to him, after the death of the aforesaid Robert his father, and his mother, for the term of his life. And he renders annually 30s 4d, and for entry/gersum as appears.

Gersum 50s William Tailour, the son of Robert Tailour, took as before, one messuage and one bovate of land, with the appurtenances, in the same place, in the tenure of the said Robert, to hold to him, after the death of the said Robert his father, and his wife, for the term of his life. And he renders annually 10s 4d, and for entry/gersum as appears.
