UNIT 1 INTRODUCTION TO SCULPTURE WEEK 1
Students will: • Be introduced to the main ideas presented in the standards for art education. • Be introduced to basic sculpting techniques and methods. • Understand the rules of ceramic safety and storage.
UNIT 2 SLAB BUILDING TECHNIQUES WEEK 1 - 5
Students will: • Build a clay tile using additive and subtractive sculpting techniques to alter the surface of the tile. • Demonstrate how to use a plaster mold to form a slab, and create a bowl, or other 3-D form. • Use slab construction techniques to create a geometric container, with lid, and surface textures. • Use glazes to decorate clay forms.
UNIT 3 GREEK COIL POTTERY WEEK 6 -8
Students will: • Investigate ancient Greek pottery forms to determine similarities and differences among forms. • Discuss the myths and designs typical of Greek pottery. • Identify a variety of typical Greek pottery forms to be used as inspiration for an original piece of art. • Use coil construction techniques, and knowledge of Greek designs to create a Greek inspired form. • Experiment with the application of underglaze to greenware, and combine with clear overglaze.
UNIT 4 PINCH POTTERY FORMING WEEK 8 -10
Students will: • Learn pinch forming techniques. • Investigate how both ancient and modern artist have combined the various hand-building techniques to create their own original pottery. • Create an original work that combines the various hand building techniques students have learned in Units 1 – 4.
UNIT 5 PAPER MACHE MASKS WEEK 11 -12
Students will: • Examine traditional mask forms and functions from a variety of cultures and time periods. • Learn paper mache construction techniques. • Design their own original paper mache mask form. • Create interesting surface decorations using acrylic paint and a variety of other materials. UNIT 6 PAPER MACHE GROUP INSTALLATION WEEK 12 - 14
Students will: • Examine installation art as an art form. • Determine group goals for an installation project, and site for installation. • Create individual pieces of work using paper mache to contribute to a group installation. • Work together to install all student work in one cohesive installation.
UNIT 7 PLASTER FORMS WEEK 15 - 19
Students will: • Explore methods of plaster constuction and plaster safety. • Create an original work using plaster.
UNIT 8 METAL FOIL RELIEF SCULPTURE WEEK 19 - 20
Students will: • Explore traditional metal foil and tin art work. • Learn how a tin relief can be used to wrap around a three dimensional form. • Create an original tin relief designed to wrap around a found form and create a neatly crafted container.
