Gary D. Sides

Dr. Gary Sides has more than 30 years of experience in the development and manufacture of automated, near-real-time (NRT) monitoring systems for chemical agents and related instrumentation. Dr. Sides’ accomplishments include the development and manufacture of small quantities of the ACAMS (1978-1990), the NRT monitoring system for GB, VX, and HD that was used at the first operational US demilitarization site (JACADS) to dispose of chemical weapons under the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and that is currently in use at four active US demilitarization sites (ANCDF, PBCDF, TOCDF, and UMCDF). He also founded CMS Research Corporation in 1986, now a division of OICO, and developed and manufactured the MINICAMS and numerous monitoring accessory products from 1986-1998. The MINICAMS—capable of monitoring for all agents of interest, including Lewisite—was used at two previous US demilitarization sites (ABCDF and NECDF) and is currently intended for use at two other sites (PCAPP and BGCAPP). Dr. Sides has also conducted extensive studies involving the detection, chemical decontamination, and thermal destruction of chemicals agents; developed NRT analytical methods for ACAMS and MINICAMS for all agents in the US stockpile; and conducted numerous studies of the permeation of chemical agents through protective barrier materials. In addition, he recently was a member of two different National Research Council subcommittees that evaluated the impact of new, lower Airborne Exposure Limits (AELs) on operations at US stockpile and non-stockpile disposal facilities. Dr. Sides currently serves as the Chief Scientist for Battelle’s Environmental Solutions and Process Operations Group, which is responsible for laboratory and air monitoring operations at four different agent destruction sites.
