1Amend Section 618 - Grassed Surfaces to read as follows: 2 3 “SECTION 618 - GRASSED SURFACES 4 5618.01 Description. This work includes preparing the areas designated in 6the contract and planting with grass according to the contract. 7 8618.02 Materials. The grass that will be placed shall be Bermuda (Cynodon 9dactylon) except giant varieties. Get the grass by digging up luxuriant growths 10from areas that are free of seeds, roots, plants, and other types of grasses. 11The Engineer will not accept the grass unless the Contractor plants and waters 12the grass within 24 hours after digging the grass out from its original growing 13position. 14 15 Other materials shall conform to the following: 16 17Planting Soil 712.17 18 19Commercial Fertilizer 712.18(A) 20 21Mulch and Soil Amendments 712.45 22 23618.03 Construction Requirements. 24 25 (A) Ground Preparation. Before planting, clear the areas that will 26 be grassed: 27 28 (1) of unwanted plants (including their root system), 29 30 (2) stones over 3 inches in diameter, 31 32 (3) papers, 33 34 (4) trash, and 35 36 (5) debris. 37 38 Grade the planting areas to the dimension and elevations shown in 39 the contract or as specified by the Engineer. 40 41 When the existing soil in the areas to be grassed is suitable for use 42 as planting soil, scarify the soil to a depth of not less than 6 inches from 43 the finished surface shown in the contract. Work the soil until the soil is 44 of a uniform and loose texture, free from stones greater than 0.5 inch in 45 diameter and appropriate for planting. When requiring additional 46 material, spread and grade the planting soil to conform to finish surface 47 shown in the contract. 48 1 (Project No.) 2 618-1a 11/02/04 49 50 Excavate the areas unsuitable for planting to a depth of not less 51 than 6 inches from the finished surface and backfill with planting soil. 52 Spread and grade the planting soil to conform to the finish grade shown in 53 the contract. 54 55 The Contractor shall be responsible for the disposal of excavated 56 material. 57 58 Add a soil conditioner to surfaces to be grassed. Rototill a 2 inch 59 thick layer of soil amendment into the soil to a depth of not less than 6 60 inches until: 61 62 (1) the soil is loose and fine textured and 63 64 (2) free from stones greater than 0.5 inch in diameter. 65 66 (B) Planting. Planting shall be by sprigging, matting, seeding, 67 mulch or seeding. When planting is by sprigging or matting, roll the 68 surface with a suitable lawn roller after completing the planting. 69 70 Apply the water within the same day of planting in such quantities 71 to moisten the soil to the depth of the planter grass. Make additional 72 application to keep the planted areas continually damp to the grass depth 73 and until the commencement of plant establishment work. 74 75 Apply the fertilizer at not less than the rate of 300 pounds per acre. 76 Apply the fertilizer 23 to 30 days after planting the grass. 77 78 A planting period shall begin immediately after planting the areas. 79 During the planting period, provide 95 percent coverage with 5 inch tall, 80 healthy grass within 90 days. When attaining satisfactory coverage 81 before 90 days, the Contractor may submit a written request to the 82 Engineer asking for an earlier end to the planting period. During this 83 period, the Contractor shall be responsible for the grassed areas. This 84 shall include watering, fertilizing, removal and disposal of trash and 85 debris, insects and disease control and protection. 86 87 The Engineer will extend the planting period at no cost to the State 88 if the grass planting does not conform to the contract. 89 90 After planting along a 0.25 mile section of road or smaller areas 91 satisfactorily according to the contract, the Contractor shall care for the 92 planted area upon written notice from the Engineer as specified under 93 Subsection 618.03(C) - Plant Establishment. 94 95 Complete the planting by the end of the contract time. 3 (Project No.) 4 618-2a 11/02/04 96 97 (C) Plant Establishment. Only State projects require a plant 98 establishment period. A plant establishment period is when the 99 Contractor takes care of the planted area for 9 acceptable months from 100 the accepted completion date of the planting period. 101 102 During the plant establishment period, the Contractor shall water, 103 fertilize, weed, replace unsuitable grass and mow the grassed areas. 104 Mow the grass whenever the averaged height of the grass becomes 3 105 inches. 106 107 The Engineer will credit the Contractor plant establishment days 108 when the Contractor does the planted area according to the contract even 109 if not doing work daily. 110 111 The Engineer will not credit the Contractor plant establishment days 112 when the Contractor fails to adequately do plant establishment work 113 according to the contract. 114 115 Weeding is when removing undesirable plants and their root 116 systems except nut grass. 117 118 Remove and dispose of surplus earth, papers, trash and debris 119 that accumulates in the planted areas. Care for the planted areas to 120 present a neat and clean condition. 121 122 Watering equipment shall be of a type that will not cause damage 123 to the planted area or its surroundings. Correct the water systems that 124 cause erosion or runoff and deemed unacceptable by the Engineer. 125 When the planted area or its surroundings are eroding due to the watering 126 method, immediately remove the runoff material and restore the area to 127 the original grade and condition. 128 129 Besides the initial application during the planting period, apply 130 fertilizer: 131 132 (1) at least three times during the plant establishment period, 133 134 (2) at intervals not closer than 2.5 months, and 135 136 (3) at a rate of not less than 300 pounds per acre per 137 application. 138 139 Replant the areas that does not show a thorough "catch". 140 Replant and grow the area according to the contract. 141 142 5 (Project No.) 6 618-3a 11/02/04 143 144 The Engineer will decide the acceptability of the planted areas 145 when the plant establishment period ends. Promote the grass to 146 healthy growth condition. Final acceptance will be upon providing 98 147 percent coverage with 3 inch tall, healthy grass. No 100 square feet 148 area shall have more than a total of 2 square feet of bare spot. 149 150 The Contractor shall be responsible for protecting the planted areas 151 until final acceptance of this work. Repair damages by pedestrians or 152 vehicular traffic or other causes at no cost to the State except conditions 153 as covered in Subsection 107.20 - Contractor's Responsibility for Work. 154 155618.04 Method of Measurement. The Engineer will not measure the 156grassed Grassed surfaces will be paid on a lump sum basis.for payment. 157Measurement for payment will not apply. 158 159618.05 Basis of Payment. The Engineer will pay for the accepted grassed 160surfaces on a contract lump sum basis. Payment will be full compensation for 161the work prescribed in this section and the contract documents. 162 163 The price includes full compensation for clearing and grading the planted 164areas, watering, preparing the ground, adding soil amendments, furnishing 165plants, placing and/or planting materials, plant establishment, furnishing 166equipment, materials, tools, labor, and incidentals necessary to complete this 167work. 168 169 The Engineer will pay for the following pay item when included in the 170proposal schedule:make payment under: 171 172 Pay Item Pay Unit 173 174Grassed Surfaces Lump Sum 175 176 (A) Partial Payment Schedule For Planting Period Only. 177 The Engineer will pay the accepted quantities for: 178 179 (1) 40 percent of the contract bid price upon completion of 180 planting; 181 182 (2) 60 percent of the contract bid price upon completion of the 183 planting period; or 184 185 (BA) Partial Payment Schedule For Planting Period And Plant 186 Establishment Period. The Engineer will pay the accepted quantities 187 for: 188

7 (Project No.) 8 618-4a 11/02/04 189 (1) 40 percent of the contract bid price upon completion of 190 planting; 191 192 (2) 20 percent of the contract bid price upon completion of the 193 planting period; 194 195 (3) 40 percent of the contract bid price in three tri-monthly 196 payments of 10 percent, 10 percent, and 20 percent for 197 satisfactory progress during the plant establishment period. 198 199 The Engineer will pay for planting soil according to Section 617 - Planting 200Soil. 201 202 203 END OF SECTION 618
